1 Corinthians 15:1-3
Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.  By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.  For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
New International Version (NIV)
What is the best news you have heard?  In the ancient world when a new King was crowned, a messenger went town to town and announced the good news – the gospel.  This was one of the original ways the word gospel was used.  It was not a style of preaching or music, but an announcement of a new king.
Paul went town to town announcing the new Lord and King Jesus.  Paul reminds the believers in Corinth of the gospel he preached to them, which they received.  This gospel not only saved them but was continuing to save them if they really believed.   The good news cannot be reduced to a formula by which we get into heaven.  The gospel is not only the way we get saved but the way we continue to live our whole lives under the sovereignty of our King.
This is why we remind ourselves of the good news we believed.  Because Jesus is the crucified and risen Lord, we can be saved.  As we hold firmly to this message, we confirm the reality of our salvation.  God wants to save us.  This is the best news of all!
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the good news that Jesus is King.  Remind us again that we are worse off than we thought and more loved than we ever dreamed.  Show us that you are saving us through your son.  Help us to hold fast to the good news and to share it with others.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
