Virtual Poster Contest - Abstracts are due Sept. 18

In conjunction with the Oct. 10 Virtual Conference, APPA will host its first ever Virtual Resident/Medical Student Poster Contest. Residents and students who are interested in participating are asked to coordinate with a faculty member in preparing a poster for the meeting. The posters are assigned abstract numbers and are published on the APPA website so count as “Published Abstracts” on your CV. This is a very easy way to build your academic portfolio!

The top scoring abstracts will be invited to present a virtual poster to be viewed and voted on by conference participants. The top three submissions will be awarded cash prizes.

Abstracts should be sent to Luke Engeriser, MD, lengeriser@altapointe.org, by Sept. 18 for consideration. See examples of abstracts at www.alabamapsych.org/abstracts.

Specifications for virtual posters will be available soon.

Conference Spotlight: Implementation of Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program for Severely Mentally Ill Patients: Is it Feasible/Sustainable/Effective?
Praveen Narahari, MD, MS

Praveen Narahari, MD, MS, is assistant medical director for AltaPointe Health Systems He earned his medical degree from N.T.R. University of Health Sciences - Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal, India. He also obtained a master’s degree in community nutrition from Eastern Kentucky University.

Before beginning his residency in adult psychiatry at the University of South Alabama he volunteered as research assistant at the University of Louisville, Department of Psychiatry. He served as chief resident of psychiatry during his PGY 4 year and received the Red Sash Award from the USA medical student class of 2015, 2016 and 2017. He received Faculty Teacher of the Year award from residents in 2018.

Dr. Narahari’s special interests are in the area of biological psychiatry, community psychiatry and psychopharmacology.

Dr. Narahari will present Implementation of Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program for Severely Mentally Ill Patients: Is it Feasible/Sustainable/Effective? at 10:45 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 10.

Learning Objectives

Name three different theories of obesity, explain the role of hypothalamic dysfunction in obesity, and name two new treatments.
Recall two historic examples of physician-assisted suicide approaches, two different legal principles, two ethical principles that apply, and two ways to respond to patients requesting assisted death.
Explain legal use and proper handling of PDMP information, describe existing legal restraints (related to HIPAA and state law), and name three case scenarios where they will use PDMP.
Define three potential causes of increased hospitalizations, and three interventions shown to reduce re-hospitalization rates of mentally ill patients.
Describe evolutionary aspects of at least three different mental illnesses, explain the FSD model, and apply the new diagnostic framework to their clinical practice.
Name criteria differentiating childhood bipolar disorder from DMDD, Fragile X syndrome, and anger overload, as well as name at least four DSM-5 differential diagnoses for children with severe outbursts, with the related specific and general treatments.
