Genesis 35:1-3
Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”
2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.”

New International Version (NIV)
Someone shrunk the sanctuary where I was baptized.  My friend Scott, his son Conrad, my son Chase, and I stopped by Kaiserslautern, Germany on the way to Zambia.  Faith Baptist church was huge when I went to VBS and Royal Ambassadors there as a boy.  I walked up to the baptistery to see where Pastor Pardee immersed me in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Then we went to Schrollbach where I prayed to receive Christ and Gross Gerau where God called me to preach.
Jacob went back to Bethel where God had first spoken to him.  His family members prepared by burying their idols. One must not traipse nonchalantly into God's presence.  No idols allowed.  God showed up again.  Jacob renewed his commitment to God.
We may not be able to return to geographical spots where God first moved us. Thankfully, our God travels.  He will find us.
What would we need to leave behind to worship God?  Let's return to the Lord.  He will heal our wandering hearts.  Places change, but Jesus Christ is the same.  Return to him now.  God is near - right here.
Pray with me:
Father, how we thank you for the times when you seemed so close.  As we draw near you today, please draw near to us.  Help us to begin again, with you.  In Jesus' name, we pray.  Amen.
Our 2023 Every Day with Jesus readings are taken from Robert Murray M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Calendar. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
Please join us in reading through the scriptures again this year.  We will read the New Testament twice and the Old Testament once this year. M'Cheyne once said, “A man is who he is on his knees, and nothing more.”  Would you pray with me that God will make his word live to us this year?  Let’s not just get through the Bible.  Let it get through to us!

Joyfully,
Duane
