Esther 4:14
"For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
New International Version (NIV)
For every one of us there are strategic moments in life.  In John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany which hit the Motion Picture Screen as Simon Birch, he tells the story of a young boy with physical limitations.  The boy has a strong sense that his limitations will actually make him an instrument of God.  In the movie version, a pastor casts aspersions on diminutive Simon’s grandiose vision for his life.

When ancient Israelites found themselves in exile in Persia, God used a beauty pageant of sorts to raise a young Hebrew woman to the throne of Persia as Queen.  Afterward her people faced a plan of extermination but Queen Esther felt helpless to intervene.  Her relative Mordecai fortified her with this encouraging statement of purpose:  you are where you are for such a time as this.  God will accomplish his purposes through you or around you.  Let God use you and fulfill your purpose in life.  The Queen accepted responsibility and her actions saved the lives of her people.

One pastor says there are two great moments in life:  the moment you are born and the moment you realize why you were born.  Simon Birch was born to save his younger classmates from drowning.  Esther was born to save her people from genocide.  Jesus was born to seek and to save the lost.  Why were you and I born?  For each of us the answer is different.  But we all have one thing in common.  We were not born to make a name for ourselves but to glorify God by using our lives to lead people closer to him.

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for your goodness and your grace in giving us life.  Show us your greater purpose for our lives.  We could be the star of our own stories and live for our own glory.  But let us be in your story Lord.  Let us live for your glory Lord.  We give you back the life we owe to you alone.  Use us as you will.  Let us not waste our lives.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
