Working, Learning, And Enjoying Life On The Road
With an increasing number of companies offering employees the option to work from home, and given today’s technology, more and more people are realizing they can work from anywhere! And many have concluded that “anywhere” might as well be somewhere scenic; someplace with comfortable temperatures; and a location with plenty of fun things to see and do outside office hours. Enter the RV, the ideal rolling office. This month we’re sharing tips for working while traveling, including information about RVs with dedicated office space.
Â
RVs also can serve as rolling classrooms, and “homeschooling” has transformed to “roadschooling.” What better way to learn about history and geography, for instance, than by traveling to the spots where history was made and where geography can be studied in person? So, we’ll share tips about learning on the road as well.
Â
With the days of summer waning, now is the time to get out there and squeeze out every last drop of fun this season!

Seize the day!

Workin' For A Livin' . . . On The Road
You love RVing, but you know you still have to pay the bills. You see more and more folks launch into the mobile working lifestyle. How can you follow suit?
Â
Uprooted Traveler provides extensive info for RVers who desire to work from the road. For starters, Jess and Justin cite the importance of having reliable internet service and ample power.
Â
Internet: Campgrounds often furnish Wi-Fi for internet access, which, as most RVers know, can be hit-or-miss. Coffee shops, libraries, etc. are other internet options, but it may be time-consuming to locate a good spot (and a quiet one for meetings or phone calls). On the tech side, you can consider acquiring a mobile hotspot, which utilizes a signal from a cell carrier and provides internet to a Wi-Fi network inside your RV. Some RVers amp it up with a cellphone booster — an antenna mounted outside your RV that rebroadcasts a cell signal indoors. Jess and Justin prefer a MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) antenna, which increases their hotspot’s performance. In addition, they suggest that RVers keep an eye on Starlink satellite internet technology, developed by SpaceX, which could become a game-changer.
Â
RV power: In addition to securing campsites with electrical hookups or purchasing a generator, RVers are increasingly investing in solar power to charge their batteries and, hence, their various systems. (Read about solar power and other off-the-grid possibilities in this Family RVing article.)
Â
KOA offers a bevy of common-sense RV working tips, too. For example, their bloggers suggest you stick to a routine to avoid being sidelined by your scenic surroundings! Remain in one spot for at least a week to lower your stress level and time spent moving elsewhere. It’s also a good idea to create a dedicated workspace in your RV, and to work during the hours you feel most comfortable (you’ll be more productive).
Â
By now you may be asking: “But how do I find a job on the road?” May we suggest Workamper News, a purveyor of employment tips, resources, and job listings. RVers work the sugarbeet harvest, serve as campground hosts, and fill positions at NASCAR races, among numerous other opportunities.
Â
The National Park Service is always looking for employees at its 400-plus locations throughout the U.S. Whether you’re seeking a full-time, permanent position or a seasonal gig, the possibilities are many. Visit here to learn how to apply. Note that many open NPS positions are available for folks with professional training as well, such as IT and accounting. If the shoe fits. . . .

Office Space With A Mobile View
With more remote work opportunities available to RVers, workspace is a must-have feature for many RV owners. Brands such as Airstream, Keystone, Fleetwood, and Forest River are including spaces in their newest floor plans to meet this demand. The 2023 Airstream Flying Cloud 25FB was even featured in the June issue of Family RVing magazine because of its ergonomic office space. At the press of a touchpad, an electronically controlled adjustable-height desk can raise to standing level, countertop level, or anywhere in between. Nearby windows also make for a great office view!
Â
If you decide to purchase an RV with office space or even DIY your own space, there are several ways you can create a professional mobile working environment. Trying noise-canceling headphones to block out campground sounds, staying connected using hotspots or satellite internet, and maintaining a healthy work/life balance can help you enjoy your space while also staying productive. For more RV office inspiration, check out this list of 11 awesome RVs with office space (2023 models). In addition, be on the lookout for the upcoming September issue of Family RVing, which provides more info about the Fleetwood Frontier GTX included in the list. This Type A motorhome is offered with an optional rear “Corner Office,” among many other amenities.
