Preparing for a New Era of Impact: A Message from
Gil Preuss
Two weeks ago, our Federation Board of Directors approved a guiding strategic framework for 2019-2025. The plan stems directly from our 21st century mission to inspire, build, and sustain vibrant Jewish life in a changing world. At its best, Jewish life provides a vital sense of belonging, a purpose, a community of people, and a values-based perspective with which to view the world. Know a Teen in Northern Virginia Who Wants to Change the World?
Federation’s flagship Jteen Philanthropy program continues to expand. This month, the 2018-19 session kicks off with three new cohorts of teen leaders, representing 22 synagogues/youth groups and 17 different high schools in Greater Washington. The participants will engage in hands-on philanthropy, while learning the Jewish values of tzedakah (justice), gemilut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness) and tikkun olam (repairing the world). If you know a teen in Northern Virginia who is ready to make a direct impact on the world, encourage them to apply for the Northern Virginia cohort!

Reboot Your Jewish Learning as an Adult
One of the critical metrics for measuring the vitality and sustainability of a Jewish community is the number of adults engaged in learning. Beyond the value of children being educated in schools, often a compulsory activity, adults who continue their learning in multiple settings do so as a compelling activity, one that is responding to a more mature search for meaning, purpose in life, and to embark on a journey sparked by curiosity.
