This edition of "Notes from Netzer" comes at the conclusion of a month infused with uncommon levels of grief and pessimism because of the loss of life across the world, in the United States and right here in our beloved community. During these times, it can seem as if something is trying to test our resolve, happiness and hope.
However, we don’t have to look hard to witness how, even during times of heartbreak, there are heartwarming acts of kindness and compassion. Like when people work together to support one another, offer assistance to someone in need or provide emotional support to those experiencing personal crises.
Right here on campus over the past month, I have been informed by students, parents and the community about acts of kindness carried out by Red Dragons. Examples include staff accompanying a student to the hospital during a health scare (while also keeping worried parents informed), students reaching out to local families who need help, faculty providing students with the grace they need to complete coursework during a trying time, and members of our community putting in extra effort to support one another through advice, a conversation over coffee or a simple hug.
Kind acts serve as beacons of hope when social media and the news highlight the darkest aspects of human nature. Looking for this kindness and showing support to others can remind us that there is goodness that still exists, that it can outshine the bad news and that it provides evidence of our resilience and humanity.
Let us continue to offer each other that extra bit of mercy, be resilient and spotlight the goodness.
Sincerely,
Alberto J.F. Cardelle
President

SUNY Oneonta Signs on as AmeriCorps School of National Service
| |
This month, SUNY Oneonta joined the ranks of the AmeriCorps Schools of National Service. By committing to become a School of National Service, we not only acknowledge the value of AmeriCorps service but will also offer benefits for alumni of the AmeriCorps program who choose our university to continue their education.
After completing their AmeriCorps service, members can earn the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which they can use to pay for post-secondary education at eligible institutions. SUNY Oneonta will offer AmeriCorps alumni a one-year enrollment deferral, up to five $1,000 scholarships to match the Segal award, and evaluation of service for potential academic credit. SUNY also recently announced a system-wide application fee waiver for AmeriCorps alumni to apply to up to seven SUNY campuses at no cost.
As an institution recognized for our commitment to community engagement, we will use this new designation to reach students who already exhibit leadership by giving their time to benefit others and who have demonstrated the altruistic nature that aligns with our culture and core value of service. This effort will help AmeriCorps alumni know that we are proud of their accomplishments, recognize the merits of their commitment to civic engagement and respect their unique skills and experience gained through participating in national service. It will also help us expand the diversity of our student body and the lived experiences of our students. SUNY Oneonta’s mission highlights our dedication to nurturing an environment where students can ‘live purposefully,’ and the AmeriCorps School of National Service designation is one more way we can work to fulfill that pursuit.

Strategic Opportunities Funding Round Three Update
Julie Piscitello
Vice President for Finance & Administration
The third round of proposals submitted for initiatives in support of Strategic Opportunities outlined in the "Regaining Momentum Agenda" garnered 18 requests totaling $1,233,418. Of the 18 requests, eight were approved for Strategic Opportunities funding, totaling $297,840. Another two requests, totaling $547,799, were funded instead through new funds provided in the NYS and SUNY budget process.
From March 2022 through May 2023, there were three rounds of funding opportunities supporting the agenda, with a grand total of $1.34 million committed toward 30 initiatives that will run through 2026. The funded initiatives are listed on the "Regaining Momentum" website.
The university’s Strategic Planning Plan, in process now, will develop a long-term vision through 2033. The University Integrated Planning Council will then form the next short-term agenda, a set of short-term goals, to move the university toward the long-term vision. After the next agenda is adopted, a new series of funding opportunities to support it will be offered and administered by the University Budget Committee. The new agenda is expected to be completed in April 2024.
An official communication about the next funding opportunities will go out when the next application window opens. Information about the prior funding process and outcomes can be viewed on the University Budget Committee website. There may be some updates and minor changes to the process for the next opportunities, but the current process information may help get you started if you are considering a new initiative.
Congratulations to those who received funds for new initiatives in the third round of Strategic Opportunities Funding. We look forward to the next institutional agenda and opportunities to fund new and innovative proposals to support the university’s priorities over the next few years.

Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award
| |
Earlier this month, SUNY Oneonta was named a recipient of the 2023 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award for making diversity and inclusion top priorities across campus. "INSIGHT Into Diversity" magazine recognized just 109 colleges and universities nationwide with this honor this year. Along with acknowledging the university's accomplishments related to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice planning and accountability, the HEED award reinforces our commitment to assessing related goals and strengthening areas that need additional attention.

Enhancing SUNY Oneonta's Internal Digital Experience
Deb McClenon, Director of ITS Systems & Solutions
Jennifer Smith, Associate Director of Digital Strategy
Karyn Wendrow, Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Executive Communications
The transition to the new platform to host the myOneonta Portal is well underway. Our cross-divisional portal team continues to develop the functionality and design of the portal within the new software. The new version of myOneonta will provide a single place for students and employees to easily find links to resources, forms and tools, announcements, and important apps. We have expanded our testing pool to assist the portal steering team in testing content so they can provide our technical team with valuable feedback on the look and feel. We will transition to this new, modern platform on Nov. 27, 2023. Continue to watch the Oneonta Bulletin for more regular updates.
The Office of Communication and Marketing (OCM), Office of the President and IT Services (ITS) also continue our work to develop the new SUNY Oneonta Intranet. This new online environment, backed by Office 365's SharePoint, will house internally focused information – both new and content transitioned from the external website – to provide a consistent platform for communication and collaboration. This project directly supports the work OCM is doing for the 2023-2025 New Student Enrollment Plan by strengthening the external suny.oneonta.edu website's effectiveness as an outward-facing recruitment tool. The team continues to work closely with departments, groups and committees to evaluate content on their suny.oneonta.edu webpages and discuss their communication and collaboration needs to determine which content relates to external audiences (or is required to be public to comply with legal or statutory requirements) and which content is more internally focused.
Additional updates will be provided in the Oneonta Bulletin as this process continues. We thank everyone for their partnership as we work to make our online content more accessible and relevant for both internal and external audiences. Please reach out to Deb McClenon, Jennifer Smith or Karyn Wendrow with any questions.
