Personal Counseling an Important Part of Digital Learning

Since moving to Digital Learning on March 23, the school’s focus has been on the continued delivery of the Father Ryan educational experience.  But two of the companion experiences of this digital learning are anxiety and boredom for our students.
Mrs. Rhonda Jones, the Director of Personal Counseling at Father Ryan, and her team are working with students to address these issues and others that they may be experiencing through individual and group meetings and the Peer Mentoring program. Personal Counseling is hosting group meetings each Friday at 1:00pm, with the first one today focused on the twin issues of anxiety and boredom.
You can learn more about Personal Counseling’s programs in our Wednesday Webinar on April 22 at 12:30pm. Mrs. Jones and Mr. Joe Crumby '95, Dean of Students, will join Mr. McIntyre to discuss Personal Counseling’s programs and ways to help your student deal with these and other issues. Register for the webinar today.
Visit the Personal Counseling page for more information about programs, Peer Mentoring and the full services of this distinctive aspect of Father Ryan.
Digital Learning Extended Through End of the School Year
The announcement yesterday from Superintendent of Catholic Schools Rebecca Hammel confirmed what we were expecting – our beautiful campus will remain closed and digital learning will continue through the end of the school year.
As a result of this news, we can now confirm changes to our calendar to address a number of planned events, including Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation. Click here for an updated calendar for the remainder of the school year.

Saluting our Top Students

With the addition of congratulatory signs to the yards of Rachel Knapp '20 and Danny Farone '20, Mr. McIntyre, Mr. Davis and Mrs. Anton formerly announced that Rachel and Danny are the Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2020.
Rachel, a St. Matthew alumna and parishioner, has taken an impressive 10 AP courses and is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She’s learned the values of leadership and teamwork as a member of the Swimming and Diving Team and the Cross Country and Track Teams. Our Valedictorian shares her faith life as a Minister of Holy Communion, a Retreat leader, and a member of the Relay for Life Committee.
Danny is a St. Rose of Lima alumnus and parishioner who served as Co-Chair of the record setting and award winning 2019 Relay for Life.  The Class of 2020’s Salutatorian has also taken 10 AP courses while playing on the Rugby Team, competing in Science Olympiad and serving as a Minister of Holy Communion. Danny is the President of the National Honor Society and a member of the Cum Laude Society and Mu Alpha Theta.
Congratulations to Rachel and Danny. We are proud of your dedication and accomplishments while at Father Ryan.

Scripture Art Enlivens Our Faith Life

Every day for Theology faculty member Mrs. Kate McGee starts a little differently than most of us. In addition to getting the day started for her young children with breakfast prep and clothing choices, Mrs. McGee gets herself prepared by prayer and art. She chooses a scripture verse and then hand illustrates that message for her and her family.

Ryan Nation has been the beneficiary of her talent, particularly through our digital learning period.  Her art has been a highlight of each morning on the Father Ryan Faith Life page of the website. We hope you have enjoyed her reflection and her art.
If you haven’t seen them yet, visit fatherryan.org/faithlife and see her full portfolio. It’s a wonderful way to reflect and enjoy each day.

Summer School Update

Many people are concerned about the effects of COVID-19 as it relates to Summer School. Summer School Principal Matt Puryear wanted to make sure our parents know that we are currently working under the assumption that Summer School will go on as scheduled. Superintendent Hammel and the Father Ryan administration are closely monitoring the situation, and we will follow their guidance and direction in finalizing plans for the summer calendar. Mr. Puryear expects to conduct Summer School as scheduled, but he will remain flexible as we plan to provide a meaningful educational experience in a safe environment.

Admissions is Open!

While so many in our community’s Catholic schools are focused on the completion of this school year, a number of families have their eyes focused also on next year, when their 8th graders enter high school.
Father Ryan’s Admissions Team is working closely with all of these families as they prepare for the transition or are still considering their high school options. They are also talking to many families who are beginning their search for high school for their 7th graders. If you or anyone you know needs to talk with them, visit them at: fatherryan.org/admissions.
ATHLETICS – Director of Athletics Ann Mullins ’03 announced today that senior hockey players Peter Faulkner '20 and Xavier Tanner '20 have been named to the Tennessean’s All-State team!
She also said that Summer Camp at Father Ryan is still planned to run as scheduled, although she is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as the summer approaches.
VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS – The news that our campus will remain closed through the end of the school year means the cancellation of this year’s musical, “Bye Bye Birdie.” However, Visual and Performing Arts Department Chair Kelli McClendon is hosting a virtual cast party tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, which would have been closing night of the musical.
You can see many of the talented performers from the Class of 2020 on Instagram @frhspurplemasque.
Enjoy a little bit of "Bye Bye Birdie" music with this uplifting tune from Henry Rodgers '22, who was cast as Albert in the production.

Saluting our Irish Heroes

There are countless heroes throughout our community, providing support, care and services to help those battling the COVID-19 and everyone in our community who is dealing with the safer-at-home environment.  We are saluting a number of Irish Heroes on social media each week, including Dr. Heather (Carpenter) Barnett '95, Christy Boyd '15, Marina Pickney '15, Olivia Schapker '15, Marisa Benson '15 and Maggie Mullins '15.
You can nominate an Irish Hero online at: fatherryan.org/hero.

Stay Connected with Digital Learning

We know that our connections keep us together in a variety of ways. Here are some examples:
Irish Foodies – Many area restaurants and catering enterprises are helmed by Irish chefs and families. We’ve updated our list of those restaurants and caterers for your use. Supporting our Irish Foodies is important, not just to keep us fed but to keep many of these businesses in business.
Stephanie Langston '97 did a story on Channel 2 this week profiling Arnold’s, a Nashville, and nationally recognized, meat-and-three, owned and operated by Father Ryan parent Kahlil Arnold. Even as renowned a place as Arnold's is feeling the impact, and the family is concerned about their restaurant's future. So we encourage you to plan a meal from there and any of the area Irish Foodies restaurants in the area.  We want to continue to enjoy their menus for years to come.
Social Media – Be sure you're following us on social media, and encourage your children to follow Campus Ministry on Instagram for news on their activities.

Signs of Hope All Around Us

Today was a wonderfully uplifting day.
After receiving the disappointing – but not unexpected news – from Superintendent Rebecca Hammel yesterday that our beautiful campus would remain closed and digital learning would continue through the end of the school year, I was a bit saddened for our community, particularly the Class of 2020. But that sadness didn’t last long.
This morning, I joined Mr. Davis, Mrs. Anton, Mr. Crumby, Mrs. Preston, Mr. Magness, and Coach Mullins in traveling throughout our area to place congratulatory signs in the yards of every member of the Class of 2020 and to leave a Father Ryan blanket at each home.  As I put the signs in the yards, I paused to look at the residences, and I was struck by the thought of the families living in each one and what the senior there was thinking.  I found myself reflecting on that student and what he or she has meant to Father Ryan.  I thought about their arrival as freshmen, of their experiences across the spectrum of activities, of their leadership, their commitment, their faith and their devotion to Father Ryan.  And I found myself even more humbled by the opportunity my leadership team and I have to be a part of this remarkable school.
Even though these students are not going to have the traditional ending of their Father Ryan years, I have no doubt that they will be exemplars of Father Ryan, perhaps in an even more special way than other classes.  These last six weeks and the ones that follow have given them a practical experience in dealing with unexpected obstacles – always a valuable experience – and  the way they have responded to these hurdles gives me even greater confidence in who they will be in the years to come.  They have proved to be resilient, responsive, able to adapt, and focused on serving others, and they will be able to deal with, learn from and succeed greatly because they are the Class of 2020.
Yes, this was a wonderful day, one that will inspire me often in the coming weeks.  Knowing our future for the remainder of the school year has given us clarity for our end of year events.  I encourage you to view the new calendar that we have developed to detail the planned status of events for the year’s end.  That includes a Senior Celebration on June 18-20 on the campus – depending on government directives – where we will honor this exceptional class.  I salute them and their families, and I look forward to celebrating this memorable year with Ryan Nation.
With our ongoing prayers to our Blessed Mother for those who are affected by this virus and for all throughout our community, I am reminded that WE are Father Ryan.
Peace,
Jim McIntyre
President
