Happy November!

In this special issue, we focus on our Thanksgiving events and programs. From continued delivery of food bags in our COVID-19 Emergency Food Distribution and #EveryoneGetsAGarden program, making pumpkin pies with our education staff, to #GivingTuesday. Enjoy reading about what we've been up to!

During this challenging holiday season, we’d like to thank you for your continued support and look forward to future service in the Newark community.

Thanksgiving Meal Bags

In conjunction with LISC, Fairmount Heights Neighborhood Association, and Zone 7 we were able to create and deliver 50 special Thanksgiving food bags to seniors and families in Newark. We connected with these community members through our #EveryoneGetsaGarden program, which provides free gardening materials and expert online instruction and consultation for beginning gardeners to get started growing food at home or in community gardens. All this food came from small, local farms (via Zone 7) and producers including herbs from our Outdoor Learning Center! The bags contained all the key Thanksgiving ingredients including sweet potatoes, collard greens, squash, golden potatoes, celery, apples, brussels sprouts, a jar of New Jersey cranberry sauce, and more!

Make Pumpkin Pies with us!

Thanks to some extra pumpkins from our October Pumpkin Patch events we were able to make over 50 pies for families on Thanksgiving. Our education team baked these pies which started by making the pumpkin puree from scratch, shaping dough, and packaging them. They were then delivered for the Fairmount Heights Neighborhood Thanksgiving celebration.

#GivingTuesday

Started in 2012, Giving Tuesday is a day that encourages people around the world. On this day hundreds of millions of individuals are inspired to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

You can show your generosity in a variety of ways! Volunteer at our Urban Farm or for our COVID-19 Emergency Food Distribution effort, advocate for our mission by sharing our cause on social media, or donate and support our programs.

Second Saturday Family Adventure

Every Second Saturday of the month is our Saturday Family Adventure day! This month children and their families gathered at our Outdoor Learning Center for some socially distanced exploration of our gardens. At our Urban Environmental Center on Prince Street, we have abundant grounds including a small pond where you can find turtles, frogs, and fish, a chicken coop, and ten themed gardens, including a sensory garden. Children were introduced to a sensory banquet there and were able to learn about the changing seasons. They gathered natural materials to create a collage and tried their hand at flower-pounding to make unique bookmarks.
