Acts 13: 26 - 31
26 “Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.

New International Version (NIV)
Some years ago, a survey about greatest fears in life revealed that death is the second greatest fear. What was the greatest fear? According to the survey it was the fear of public speaking. Taken to a logical conclusion, some would rather be in the casket than speak at the funeral.

Paul did not miss the chance to speak a word about Christ. Notice that Paul knew his audience. He addressed children of Abraham and God-fearing Gentiles. No one in Paul’s hearing was beyond the grace of God to save. Paul also knew his subject:  he offered the message of salvation. The people of Jerusalem and their rulers condemned Jesus to death on the cross. Unwittingly, they fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 53 by crucifying Christ. But God raised Jesus from the dead. Jesus appeared to his people and they became witnesses to all who would listen.

Once again, we see God working all things together for good. As Joseph said to his brothers, “You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20). When humankind was at its worst, God used our very act of hatred to demonstrate his victorious love. God’s answer for our insurrection was the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It still is. What the enemy means for evil, God is working for our good. This is the good news our world desperately needs to hear. Will we bear witness today?

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for finding a way to save us. As we see the pain in our world, help us not to lower our eyes in despair lamenting about what the world has come to. Instead, let us lift our eyes in delight and tell others that you have come to the world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
