John 7:46
“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
New International Version (NIV)
I have the best conversations in elevators!  At a hospital this week, I entered with a man who was receiving directions from a woman with an accent.  My new friend and I spent the next few floors trying to figure out his helper’s country of origin.  “Russian,” I concluded, decisively.  “I don’t know,” he said, “but I could listen to it all day.”  “British is even better,” he added as we exited the elevator.  I concurred, “True.  People can listen to a British speaker talk about anything, mesmerized for hours.  I talk for ten minutes and people get tired.”  He smiled as he walked away and said, “I have to go.  I’m getting tired just listening to you.”  Our laughs echoed in the halls as we walked away.

The officers sent to arrest Jesus returned without him.  “Why didn’t you bring him back?” asked Jesus’ highly religious opponents.  “No man ever spoke like this,” they explained.  Spurgeon once took this at face value and compared Jesus to other famous speakers like Moses, Noah, Nathan, Elijah and Jeremiah.  As to his manner of speech and his subject matter, Jesus spoke uniquely.  No wonder his Father said, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.  Listen to him.”

What is Jesus saying to you today?  No one can offer us more love, peace and comfort than Jesus.  No one knows us better than Jesus.  No one loves us more than Jesus.  No one knows exactly what we need to hear like Jesus.  Read his words today in scripture.  What is he saying?  By all means, be arrested by his words.  Then do what he says.  He will lead you to life.

 Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the Word made flesh who speaks wonderful words of life to us.  To whom else could we go?  You have the words of life.  Let us listen closely to your voice in scripture today.  Show us the way to go.  We will follow you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
