Psalm 72:17-20
 May his name endure forever;
    may it continue as long as the sun.
Then all nations will be blessed through him,
    and they will call him blessed.
Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,
    who alone does marvelous deeds.
Praise be to his glorious name forever;
    may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and Amen.
This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.

New International Version (NIV)
                What should God’s people look for in our leaders?  Today we read the end of book 2 of the hymnal and prayer book of the Old Testament.  Here  in Psalm 72 David wrote a “royal psalm” extolling the virtues he hoped for his son, Solomon, the King to exhibit like justice and righteousness.  David further hoped his son would bring prosperity to the people and defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy.  Then he prayed that his son would endure as long as the sun, moon and through all generations.

                Solomon reigned for a long time and built the temple, but he did not fulfill all of his father David’s hopes.  Though many nations were blessed through him, we would not say that all nations were.  David’s dreams would be completely fulfilled in another son, his descendant, Jesus.  This Jesus was merciful to the needy, prompting Bartimaeus to call upon him, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.”

                Only one leader is worthy of our total devotion.  His name is the Lord.  His name will last as long as the sun and through all generations.  This king cares for the needy and children.  He blesses all nations.  The earth is filled with his glory.  This Psalm is called the “conclusion of the prayers of David.”  In Jesus, David’s prayers and all of our prayers are answered.
Pray with me:
Jesus, our eternal King, answer to our prayers and the deepest longings of our souls, have mercy on us today.  Rule and reign without rival on the thrones of our hearts.  Let the earth be filled with your glory.  Let the church be filled with your glory.  Let me be filled with your glory.  In the name of the King’s only begotten Son we pray.  Amen.
