Daniel 3:28-30

28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way.”
30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

New International Version (NIV)

"And we know in all things God works for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose." Daniel and his friends did not know Romans 8:28 because it would not be written for hundreds of years. But their lives illustrate the timeless truth of Paul's words to the church in Rome.

When Judah fell, the best and brightest were deported to Babylon. While there, Daniel and his friends trusted God and grew in influence. Daniel demonstrated the gift to be able to interpret dreams. Nebuchadnezzar praised Daniel's God for giving him wisdom to understand his dream.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego defied the Nebuchadnezzar's edict to worship the idol he made of himself. This landed them in a fiery furnace. There the king saw that there were four in the furnace. God was with them in the fire. Once again, Nebuchadnezzar praised their God.

All around us today are people who may mean harm to us or to the work of God in our world. God is able to work in us today so that even those who oppose him will praise him. In the end, God's goal for those who oppose him is to convert them. Some will refuse and be destroyed. But God works for good as we love him and answer his call. Who knows what he might do through us today? God knows. He works for good. Through us he may bring atheists to praise him.

Pray with me:

Father, we thank you for working in the lives of Daniel and his friends. We believe you are working in and through us today. Draw the nations to yourself through the winsome witness of your people. We ask you to turn atheists into missionaries through the work of your church. We love you and we answer your call. In Jesus' name. Amen.
