Proverbs 19:11
A person’s wisdom yields patience;
    it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.
New International Version (NIV)
                Students across our country took the SAT yesterday.  The test purports to measure a student’s aptitude for school after they finish high school.  I remember taking the exam when I was in high school in Montana.  In so many ways it felt ultimately important.   Good results could help my parents as they put three sons through college simultaneously.  All of my years of reading and mathematics prepared me for the test.
                What if there were an exam to measure a person’s wisdom?  What categories would it measure?  The writer of Proverbs has already said that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.  Reverence is one measure of wisdom.  Wisdom also produces patience.  If patience tells us how wise we are, how are we doing?  A car accident occluded the access road beside I-10 this morning.  I looked to my right and saw a man in a green car shouting at the traffic ahead of him to move out of his way.  If patience is a virtue, he appeared less than virtuous.  How often have we exhibited impatience in similar situations?
                Another measure of wisdom is the ability to forgive others.  Has anyone ever apologized for offending you when you had taken no offense at all?  I remember saying to someone, “You cannot offend me.”  On the other hand I do sometimes get offended.  So here is another question:  has anyone ever failed to apologize to you when they offended you?  Are you willing to let it go?  It would be glorious and wise to do so.
Pray with me:
Father, remind us again of how often and how much you have forgiven us, especially when we become irascible and irritable with others.  We boldly ask you to give us patience because it is the fruit of your Spirit and the proof of wisdom.  Empower us with strong release muscles so that we may let go of offenses taken.  Fill us with your peace and make us wise.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
Joyfully,
