A Note from Peter Henke
Last month we saw the return of in-person meetings for BMC2 with the Vascular Surgery Physician Meeting at Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, MI. It was so refreshing to see colleagues face-to-face after years of meeting virtually. We look forward to welcoming physicians to the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing for the Vascular Surgery Physician Meeting on July 21st and our PCI physicians will have an opportunity to see each other in person at Cantoro Italian Market in Plymouth on November 10th.
While we have missed in-person meetings during the pandemic, the virtual platform did help to improve the way we offer coordinator training, enhanced audits, and site visits. We also appreciated the flexibility it offered while we attended meetings from our home, office, or on the road. We plan to merge the best of both experiences as we move forward by offering a mix of both virtual meetings and in-person events, for as long as it is safe to do so.
We look forward to seeing you in the coming months, no matter the location. The work that you do is essential to recording and disseminating data and using what we learn to improve quality of care and outcomes for patients across Michigan. THANK YOU for your partnership!

Site Spotlight - Spectrum Health
When BMC2 revealed its new 2022 Pay for Performance (P4P) goal of documentation of 1-year follow-up imaging after EVAR at ≥ 70%, Michele Forist, RN, looked at her site’s data and saw there was some improvement to be made. Michele presented this challenge to the Vascular Surgery Expert Improvement Team (EIT) in the hopes of getting their feedback and collaborating to solve the problem. Read our blog to learn about the collaboration that led to improvement.

Patient Spotlight - Carol Miller
Carol Miller believes cardiac rehab is essential. It is one reason she joined the BMC2 PCI Patient Advisory Council. She remembers only a few details from February 9th, 2019, the day she entered McLaren Port Huron Hospital and was diagnosed with a STEMI.
Carol arrived in the emergency department with a heart rate in the 40s and in cardiogenic shock. Her liver, kidneys, and pancreas had failed. Her troponin was over 79. She was transferred to the cath lab where she went into cardiac arrest and was treated by placement of a temporary transvenous pacemaker for a complete heart block. She underwent left heart catheterization and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and stenting of a totally occluded right coronary artery. After, she was transferred to the ICU. New Publication
Using BMC2 data, the study concluded that despite lifestyle and medical management being recommended as the first step to treat patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), only half of patients were on optimal medical therapy before surgery. A lower risk of postoperative mortality, MI, and readmission was found for patients who did receive optimal therapy.
The findings suggest that there are both significant opportunities to improve clinical utilization of evidence-based treatment of PAD and that doing so can provide postoperative benefits to patients. The paper’s authors are Ryan Howard, Jeremy Albright, Chloe Powell, Nicholas Osborne, Matthew Corriere, Eugene Laveroni, Devraj Sukul, Philip Goodney, and Peter Henke. More information can be found at PubMed.

National Presentations
BMC2 Vascular Surgery data was presented at SVS/VAM 2022 which was held June 15 - 18 in Boston.
Dr. Kiran A. Goyal presented, “Beta Blockers are Associated with Decreased 30-Day Postoperative Stroke Risk Following Both Carotid Stenting and Endarterectomy in Patients with Hypertension.” The study found that, in the study population, patients receiving beta-blocker therapy at hospital admission experienced a significant reduction in odds of experiencing stroke within the 30-day postoperative period in comparison to those taking ARB or ACEI, following both CAS and CEA. Read more in our blog.
Dr. Christopher O. Audu presented the poster “Opioid Prescription and Usage Patterns After Open Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair in Opioid-Naïve Patients.” The study concluded that while there is large variability in the number of pills prescribed to opioid-naïve patients after open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair at discharge, 90% of patients have transitioned to non-opioid pain medication by 7 days after discharge. Visit our blog to learn what this may mean for patients.
Dr. Loay S. Kabbani presented, “Utilization Of Preoperative Vein Mapping in Patients Undergoing Infra-inguinal Bypass Is Associated With Increased Use Of Venous Conduits.” The study concluded that most patients do not have perioperative vein mapping (PVM) before their infra inguinal bypass (IIB). Patients who undergo PVM are more than twice as likely to have a venous conduit used for their bypass. PVM may be a marker for physicians who are interested in best practices for IIB. Study co-authors are Abdul Kader Natour, Peter Henke, Alexander Shepard, Robert Cuff, Nick Mouawad, Mark Mattos, and Timothy Nypaver. Learn more about this study on our blog.

Opportunities for Participation
Free 1-1 Counseling Offered by Michigan OPEN - To support appropriate prescribing for vascular surgery patients, Michigan OPEN is offering BMC2 vascular surgeons the opportunity to participate in tailored, one-on-one counseling sessions. Sessions provide unbiased, evidence-based information about medications and prescribing. Participants will be compensated for their time. Learn more on our blog.
Imaging Educational Series - BMC2 seeks to create a library of archived cases to be used for training purposes. Do you have de-identified images to share? If so, this is an opportunity to contribute to BMC2’s ability to share and discuss ways to improve appropriate use of imaging during future meetings. This will lead to improved procedural and patient outcomes after PCI. Please contact the Coordinating Center if you have images or are interested in leading and participating in this initiative.
Patient Engagement at BMC2 - We are seeking additional patients that represent the diversity of our state to join our BMC2 PCI Patient Advisory Council. Can you recommend a patient to this group? There is no up-front commitment and patients will be compensated for their time.
Send the patient’s name and contact info to Annemarie Forrest, avassalo@umich.edu; or Pam Benci, plf@umich.edu. You can learn more about patient responsibilities and what we are looking for in a patient advisor by visiting our blog.
