Message from the Chair
Friends of the CEE@Vanderbilt Family,
CEE@Vanderbilt is on the rise, and a lot is happening within the department, the school and the university! I would like to highlight some of our major accomplishments that will shape the future of CEE@Vanderbilt for the years to come.
I am delighted to share the news that the new Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Major is now a reality. The major accepted its first cohort of students starting in the Fall 2024 semester. The new major provides students with the tools necessary to develop effective solutions to solve emerging and existing environmental issues surrounding climate change; sustainability; carbon neutral innovations; water resources; and aging infrastructures; among many other environmental challenges.
Our faculty are leading new university-wide initiatives directed to address critical challenges facing society. CEE has been front and center in the conception and operation of the new Vanderbilt Discovery Center on Sustainability, Energy and Climate (VSEC). Professor Hiba Baroud is the interim director as we conduct a national search for a permanent director, and several other CEE faculty are serving on the leadership team. VSEC will develop innovative solutions to promote sustainability demands and address fundamental challenges through broad interdisciplinary collaboration. Professor Doug Adams is the executive director of the newly formed Vanderbilt Institute of National Security. This institute will employ user-inspired collaboration to create novel and innovative solutions to ensure our nation’s future safety and stability, and educate the next generation leaders.
I share below a small number of the many accomplishments our faculty, undergraduate and graduate students achieved in the past few months. Celebrate these accomplishments with us, and as always, stay in touch!
Best,
Çağlar Oskay, Ph.D.
Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Engineering
Chair and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
