What is your name?
Amanda Etemad
Where was your internship located?
In Athens, Greece with
Amurtel Greece and Khora.
How has the experience influenced your career path?
I definitely want to work with refugees in the future. It has inspired me to want to go to law school and study international law. I now know that I want to live in another country for an extended period of time in my life. I would love to return to either organization in the future, with much more knowledge of immigration systems of the world.
How did you hear about these opportunities?
A friend had previously volunteered at both of these organizations.
What were your major tasks or projects?
At Khora, I taught english to refugees and assisted in creating a curriculum for the program. I was able to teach intermediate level students, that were both my age and much older. I also volunteered in their women's space by conducting group conversations about what women wanted to see be improved in the Khora community center.
At Amurtel, I was a Persian translator for all of their midwife and lactation consultant appointments. I also assisted in their distribution and inventory room in which we were able to provide new mothers with supplies free of charge.
Any recommendations for GW students who want to intern/volunteer at the same company or country?
Just be yourself in the application, and be open to any and all new experiences. This kind of humanitarian work can be exhausting so you just have to be mentally prepared.
