Danny Leipziger: Our Man in Uzbekistan

Danny Leipziger, professor of international business and managing director of the Growth Dialogue, recently returned from Uzbekistan, where he was invited by the government to create an economic council, coordinate economic reform policies and advise on the selection of external advisors.

“The government of Uzbekistan has embarked on a major program of economic reforms aimed at reversing decades of state domination of the economy,” Dr. Leipziger said. “Under President Shavat Mirziyoyev, who assumed the helm in Tashkent, the capital, in 2016, a breath of fresh air has swept the country.”
Dr. Leipziger brought decades of hands-on experience in economic management and policy coordination to the Uzbek project — including 25 years at the World Bank, advising policymakers around the globe. He was vice chair of the influential Commission on Growth and Development (2005-2009) and has served on World Economic Forum councils on globalization and inclusive economic growth.
Dr. Leipziger’s efforts on behalf of the central Asian nation were highlighted in a major Tashkent newspaper (see photo, above). As far as we know, he’s the first GWSB professor to appear in the Uzbek media.
William Halal, professor emeritus of management, technology & innovation, collaborated with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEAto produce a major report on critical technologies. AFCEA is a leading association of 35,000 corporate members serving the defense and intelligence communities in the Washington, D.C., area. Dr. Halal's  think tank, TechCast Global, partnered with AFCEA to combine their respective knowledge and forecasts to make the study authoritative, comprehensive and useful for managers. The report can be accessed here.
Salah S. Hassan, professor of marketing, presented a competitive paper, “User Engagement with Social Media: A Contrarian Analysis,” at the recent annual conference of the American Marketing Association (AMA) in Boston, Mass. Dr. Hassan and his co-authors (Dr. Rania Samir of the American University in Cairo and Professor David Ashley of GWSB) provided a detailed analysis of the factors related to users’ willingness to continue using social media and recommending it to others.

A paper co-authored by Ahmad Jarrah, associate professor of decision sciences, “Forward thresholds for operation of pumped-storage stations in the real-time energy market,” won the prestigious 2018 INFORMS Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment (ENRE) Best Paper Award in Energy. Dr. Jarrah’s co-authors were David P. Morton and Dr. Goran Vojvodic, associate principal in the energy practice at Charles River and Associates, whom Dr. Jarrah taught as a Ph.D. student. The paper was published in the European Journal of Operational Research, 254 (1): 253-266, 2016.

Getting to Know Your Colleague...

Name: Paul Konz

Title: Senior Web Designer

How long have you been at GWSB? I started on May 14.

Job duties: I manage our website. I also advise on communications strategy.

What do you like to do on weekends? Snowboarding if it’s cold, surfing or camping if it’s warm — and if it’s raining, books and films and sleep.

Favorite books: Neuromancer by William Gibson is my all-time favorite. The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff also comes to mind. Hemingway and Camus have written some pretty OK stuff, too.

Favorite movies: That’s tough. I have broad tastes. Hard to go wrong with anything directed by Wes Anderson. I’m a James Bond fan, for sure.
I also really dig atmospheric films like Blade Runner and Drive. And anything with Steve McQueen or Peter Sellers in it is good.
A favorite musical performer, song or album: That’s even tougher. I’ve been a DJ for more than 20 years, so again, broad tastes. I like everything from bossa nova to death metal.

Something my co-workers don’t know about me: I often work in solitude, and I’m rarely in my office. I need quiet corners. Focus and concentration. So, something they might not know about me is that I actually like collaboration, and I’m very approachable and open to ideas on how to make our digital presence the best out there. I’m also happy to go above and beyond to help with whatever is in my capacity, so just ask.
Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, and James Bailey, Hochberg Professorial Fellow of Leadership Development and professor of management, were mentioned in a Norman Transcript (Okla.) article, “Tom Lumpkin Wins Academy of Management Mentor Award.”

Annamaria Lusardi, Denit Trust Chair of Economics & Accountancy and academic director of the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center, was quoted in a Huffington Post article, “It’s Hard To Manage Your Credit When You’ve Never Heard Of ‘Interest.’”

Lisa Delpy Neirotti, associate professor of sport management, was quoted in a Marketplace article, “Can serve clocks make the U.S. Open more exciting?”
Dr. Neirotti also was quoted in a Washington Business Journal article, “Maryland football has a huge problem — but it might not last.”
Clint Watts, senior fellow in the Center for Cyber and Homeland Security, was quoted in an NPR (online) article, “DNC Reports Attempted Cyberattack To Feds, Says No Compromise Of Voter Database.”
