PRI Publishes Research Papers from ARDRAW’s First Cohort

ARDRAW logo
Policy Research Associates, Inc.’s (PRA’s) sister non-profit, Policy Research, Inc. (PRI), is proud to announce the publication of research papers from the first cohort of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA's) Analyzing Relationships between Disability, Rehabilitation, and Work (ARDRAW) Small Grant Program.
The ARDRAW program is a 1-year, $10,000 stipend program awarded to graduate-level students to conduct supervised, independent research designed to foster new analysis of work, rehabilitation, and disability issues.
The ARDRAW program has published the research papers from its first cohort of grantees. Topics explored within the first cohort include:
  • Barriers to employment for blind and visually impaired people
  • The impact of disability on labor force participation
  • Health, employment, and disability for individuals with co-occurring serious mental illness and chronic physical health conditions
  • Development and validation of the Career Resilience for Adults with Disabilities Scale
Commenting on the publication of the first cohort’s research, ARDRAW Project Manager Kristin Lupfer says, “SSA has not only supported the academic growth of these student researchers by providing these stipends, but it has also helped to facilitate significant contributions to the field of disability and employment studies. We are honored to manage the ARDRAW program on SSA’s behalf." The full suite of research papers is now available for review and download.

Training Spotlight: Crisis Intervention Teams for Youth

Law enforcement officers who encounter youth experiencing a behavioral health crisis have a unique opportunity to connect them to emergency mental health services or refer them to mental health screening and evaluation. While law enforcement officers are called to respond to incidents involving both adults and youth, the standard Crisis Intervention Training offered to most police officers focuses primarily on response techniques for adults, leaving law enforcement officers underprepared to address the specific needs of youth and young adults.
Crisis Intervention Teams for Youth (CIT-Y) is a youth-focused crisis training for law enforcement officers. CIT-Y is a training and collaborative approach for law enforcement officers to understand and identify adolescent development and mental health issues. It connects police officers to community leaders and services within their communities to know what resources exist when they encounter troubling behavior from youth that doesn’t necessarily require an arrest. The training also serves as a level of prevention, as officers build relationships with people and their families in their communities, allowing them to identify and assist individuals before a crisis occurs.

New Case Study Highlights the Impact of the Sequential Intercept Model in Three Communities

A cornerstone of PRA’s work, the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) is a conceptual framework used to help communities assess and address connections between their criminal justice and mental health systems. The SIM identifies six points, or “intercepts,” where individuals with behavioral health issues can be diverted toward treatment and away from further contact with the criminal justice system.
A new case study—produced by the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center and PRA Senior Project Associate Travis Parker, with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as part of the Safety and Justice Challenge—examines how three communities used the SIM to advance justice reform efforts, including their planning processes and objectives. The study, Using the Sequential Intercept Model to Guide Local Reform, explores stakeholder reflections on the process and lessons learned, including the importance of neutral facilitators, a diverse and representative group involved in the mapping process, and preparation and education around the SIM.
