Jeremiah 8:18-22
18 You who are my Comforter in sorrow,
my heart is faint within me.
19 Listen to the cry of my people
    from a land far away:
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
Is her King no longer there?”
“Why have they aroused my anger with their images,
    with their worthless foreign idols?”
20 “The harvest is past,
    the summer has ended,
    and we are not saved.”
21 Since my people are crushed, I am crushed;
I mourn, and horror grips me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead?
    Is there no physician there?
Why then is there no healing
for the wound of my people?

New International Version (NIV)
Finally, fall.  I can tell because morning temperatures fell into the low 60's.  We have been waiting.  Summer is mostly over.  So how are we?
In Israel, the end of summer marked the beginning of harvest.  The harvest provided their food for the winter.  But God had blocked the harvest in judgement of their sin.
The people lamented:  "summer is over, harvest has ended, and we are not saved."  At my first pastorate I preached a revival.  Nothing happened.  Then I awakened on Sunday and read these words in Charles Spurgeon's morning by morning.  I changed my sermon and preached these words.  The revival began out of desperation for God. It could happen again.  To us.
Pray with me:
Father, as summer ends, we realize that we are completely dependent on you.  You alone can save us.  Save us, Savior, we pray.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
Our 2022 Every Day with Jesus readings will cover the whole Bible in one year.  Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
We would love for you to join us as we read through the Bible this year. In addition, I will continue my long-standing practice of reading one Psalm a day through the year.  As we journal together this year, Highlight a verse that stands out to you, Explain what it means, Apply that truth to your life and Respond to what you’ve read with an action or prayer.
Joyfully,
Duane
