FATHER'S DAY

John Ballato (left), professor of materials science and engineering, is one of the most respected and influential optical-fiber researchers in his field. But four decades ago, he was a boy crawling onto his father’s lap to watch him write equations and draw circuits in the office of their New Jersey home, instilling a fascination within John from a young age.

Jill Gemmill, associate vice president for Research Computing and Data, was named vice chair for the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation, a national organization dedicated to promoting academic high-performance computing in support of scientific research and discovery.

As part of a Creative Inquiry (CI) course in the Department of Finance at the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business, nine students participated in the University of Georgia’s Stock Pitch Competition. This is the second year Angela Morgan, chair of the Department of Finance, has offered the CI course preparing students for the event.
