Extension Fond du Lac County Dairy & Livestock Agent Tina Kohlman discusses how we develop the non-functioning newborn calf ruminant into a ruminating heifer so they can start consuming forages to meet their growth goals and later enter the milking herd.

UW Nutrient Management Program Video: Fall Soil Sampling-Keys to Success

NPM Program Southwest Regional Specialist Daniel Smith and UW-Madison & Extension Field Crops Pathologist Damon Smith share tips and techniques for collecting post-harvest soil samples that accurately represent the fertility status of fields. Timing and weather considerations for fall manure applications are also briefly discussed, as is the importance of having a nutrient management plan for a farm.

New Milwaukee River Watershed Incentives Program Available for Agricultural Lands

$1.2 million are available to the Milwaukee River Watershed to implement soil health, water quality, and habitat conservation practices as part of NRCS’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). These funds are available to farmers and landowners within the Milwaukee River watershed area to implement conservation projects.
Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to the NRCS office or the Fond du Lac County Land and Water Conservation Department to learn about eligibility and application steps. Eligible applications received by November 19, 2021, will be contacted by a conservation planner to develop their conservation plan. All producers with at least 50% of the application area located in the Milwaukee River Watershed of Fond du Lac, Ozaukee, Washington, and Sheboygan Counties are eligible to apply. Beginning, veteran, and historically underserved producers and landowners are encouraged to inquire and apply for this new conservation initiative.

Teat End Scorer

It's that time of year to get a baseline of teat ends before the cold winter season settles in! Check out The Teat End Scorer App developed at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. The app uses a graphical interface to score teats. Data stored includes herd name, herd code, scorer name, score date, pen id, cow id, hyperkeratosis score along with the presence of teat end congestion, teat barrel congestion, mouthpiece mark, chapped, warts, and bovine herpes mammalitis.

Pest Management Update Meeting-Virtual

This year’s speakers include Mark Renz, Perennial Cropping Systems Extension Weed Specialist; Rodrigo Werle, Annual Cropping Systems Extension Weed Specialist; Nick Arneson, Weed Science Outreach Specialist; PJ Liesch Extension Entomology Diagnostician; and Damon Smith, Extension Field Crops Pathologist. Topics include updates in the area of weed, insect, and disease management and a panel discussion and Q&A regarding pest management challenges related to planting soybeans early. 
Registration for the virtual session includes links to pdfs of materials and a pdf version of the A3646 publication. Three in-person options are also available.
