(Article corrected 4/7/24) April in Oregon is Arbor Month when towns across the state celebrate their trees. We thought we would visit some of Oregon’s National Forests – and the species they protect. Welcome to Oregon, home to some of the most breathtaking national forests in the United States. There are 11 National Forests in the state:
1. Deschutes National Forest
2. Willamette National Forest
3. Umpqua National Forest
4. Mount Hood National Forest
5. Siuslaw National Forest
6. Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest
7. Wallowa-Whitman National Forest
8. Fremont-Winema National Forest
9. Malheur National Forest
10. Ochoco National Forest
11. Umatilla National Forest
Whether you’re seeking serene hikes through old-growth forests, exhilarating adventures atop rugged peaks, or peaceful moments by cascading waterfalls, Oregon’s national forests offer something for every nature enthusiast.
Oregon’s forests play a crucial role in mitigating the impacts of climate change by sequestering carbon, regulating water flow, and providing habitat for wildlife. As climate change intensifies, the resilience of Oregon’s forests will become increasingly important for the health and well-being of both humans and ecosystems. Overall, Oregon’s forests are a unique and precious resource that contribute to the state’s identity, economy, and ecological health. Protecting and preserving these forests for future generations is essential to ensuring their continued beauty and biodiversity.

NW Natural's Get "Smart Energy" |
Let's work together to address climate change. When you enroll in the Smart Energy program, you join over 92,000 NW Natural customers who are addressing the carbon emissions from their natural gas use.
For the past 13 years, Northwest Natural has encouraged customers to sign up for their Smart Energy program during their Spring membership promotion. Customers enrolled in Smart Energy have their carbon footprint addressed through a mix of carbon offsets and renewable natural gas projects. To date, Smart Energy has purchased carbon offsets from 19 projects across the Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Utah, Alaska and British Columbia. Some of these projects use captured methane, a greenhouse gas, as a renewable energy source. They will make a $10 donation to Oregon Parks Forever for each new member who signs up during this period. Learn more here.
