October 7, 2022
Hello, friends:
I wish you a happy autumn, now that the trees, weather and sometimes the air itself are “pumpkin-spiced” whether we like it or not…
I write today from an international conference of Fine Arts deans; where our first session posed questions about adaptive leadership, and successes we might share with one another that we experienced through the past two years of pandemic and socio-cultural and racial upheaval. I have to laugh when I tell you that EACH of the citations of successes and changes presented by the conference participants absolutely mirrored our experiences, challenges and successes over recent memory.
I mention this to you in hopes that you can share a feeling of accomplishment and pride in our work together through these ongoing difficult times. We’ve done our best to meet the challenges placed in our path, and to meet them with grace, equanimity and kindness. And I am most proud of the fact that we have kept our mission and primary goals clear throughout. These departmental, organizational and pedagogical adaptations are evidence of our ability to be flexible, fleet-footed and facile—and evidence that our ability to do so stems from our collaborative skills. Our individual skills and successes are highly impressive, but our collective skills and successes are remarkable.
Enjoy the remainder of autumn, as we anticipate the fast arrival of winter and the holidays.

In a potentially parallel timeline where a climate apocalypse has wiped out animals and insects, an entomologist and her brother follow a migration of monarch butterflies to what they hope is the last viable place on earth. Their encounter with a young group that fled the city to a truffle farm leads to earnest realizations and interpersonal conflict about acclimating beyond the world they once knew. With wit, whimsy, and the forces of nature, Marisela Treviño Orta’s Somewhere speculates on climate refugee migration, science vs the supernatural, environmental sustainability, and how shifts in the globe make changes in ourselves.

Orlando has savored all that life could offer to an exquisite young nobleman. He is discontent despite romances with Elizabeth I, a Russian Princess, and countless maidens, until he awakes in the body of a woman. Orlando must adapt to the social and political constraints of femme experiences across centuries, all while searching for who she truly is, with whom she needs to be, and how she can express herself. Adapted from Virginia Woolf’s classic novel, Sarah Ruhl’s Orlando is a physically and poetically lyrical exploration of place, time, privilege, and living beyond the gender binary.
