A Note from MHPN's President...
As soon as November arrives, I feel as if the MHPN begins sliding into home plate – aka “year-end.”
The Annual Fall Benefit is behind us. What a great time we had at the Durant-Dort Factory One in downtown Flint, the birthplace of General Motors. Now we’ve pivoted to the annual statewide preservation conference being held on Mackinac Island May 11-13, 2023. We’re headquartered at the historic Mission Point Resort on the island’s east end, the “Sunrise Side.” Few people know that each conference takes 18-24 months to produce. Indeed, the 2023 program is coming together right now so the brochure can drop early in the New Year. Why have we hosted the conference 43 years in a row? It’s because we receive messages such as one from a long-time member who wrote: “I always come away from the conference well-stocked with new ideas, updated information, and a reinvigorated commitment to the preservation of historic structures and neighborhoods!” Click here for his entire message.
Over the next 60 days, we’ll be asking for your year-end gifts. First up is “Shop Small Saturday,” which is a request for you to support local retailers – and the MHPN! On Saturday, November 26, I’ll begin my holiday shopping in traditional downtowns and neighborhood retail areas. No Big Box Stores for me, unless, of course, there’s a festive washer-dryer combo on the list.
Next is “Giving Tuesday” on November 29, a global day of giving to organizations important to you. We know there’s a lot of competition for your philanthropic dollars, but I hope we’ve served you well in 2022 and earned your support.
Finally, there’s year-end giving in the final days of December. I’ll say more next month, but, once again, we’ll be seeking your assistance to match the grant the Michigan Arts and Culture Council has awarded us for our services to the field. Board testimonials and homemade videos will tell you why it’s important.
For now, let me thank you for participating all year and helping us in a-hundred-and-one ways. We’ll skid into home plate together!
