Serving, Protecting and Loving Our Neighbors
Dear Friends of FaithAction,

As you know, the Trump administration released two very concerning executive orders on immigration late last week that may prove devastating to so many in our community (please continue reading below for important clarity on the impact of these policies).  We have also seen some strong conern and resistance locally and nationally (with some help from the courts) bringing much needed hope, but this will be a long journey. Here are several wonderful opportunities to put your faith into action in the days and weeks ahead:

  • Greensboro Faith Leaders will be holding All God's Children: Interfaith Vigil for Immigrants and Justice this Thursday, Feb. 2rd at 6pm at Congregational UCC (400 West Radiance Drive)

  • We'd love to have you come out and get your FaithAction ID in solidarity and friendship with your newest immigrant neighbors this Friday, Feb. 3rd at the Mullin Life Center of First Presbyterian Church - click this link for the location and requirements.

  • The International Advisory Committee is sponsoring a Police & The International Community meeting on Saturday, Feb 4th at 3:30pm at the Islamic Center of Greensboro (2023 16th Street).

  • There is also a need for willing congregations to seriously begin considering Sanctuary, so there will be a special Sanctuary meeting for faith communities this Sunday, Feb 5th at 1:30pm at Congregational UCC (400 West Radiance Drive) to learn more about the history, logistics, risks/benefits for offering faith-based Sanctuary!

  • We will be holding a Serving, Protecting and Loving our Neighbors Part 2 on Sunday, Feb 19th at 2pm at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (607 N. Greene Street) to update everyone on where things stand now in light of the new executive orders, to hear from those most directly affected, along with reports on progress from the small SPLN working groups, and discuss strategies for next steps.

  • And finally, we will be holding a special Stranger to Neighbor event to help connect our community allies with our newest immigrant neighbors over food, conversation, music, and dancing (details coming soon - please hold Thurs eve, March 2nd for now).

For 20 years we have served and advocated alongside of thousands of remarkable immigrants and refugees from around the world - not out of some political conviction, but because we have come to know, and deeply care for and respect the tremendous human beings who ring our doorbell each day.

This will not change.....and while it is difficult to imagine a more concerning time around immigration and refugee issues, we are more committed than ever to serve, protect, and love our neighbors as ourselves.  We need your support now more than ever....please consider donating to FaithAction.

Thank you friends, and please read on for clarity on the two Executie Orders, and why there is reason for hope.

1st Executive Order:

It is difficult to put into words just how destructive this could be to the safety and well being of the community we work with and serve each day at FaithAction - if we let it. In short, today's "executive orders" instruct the executive branch of the government to:

- Expand the US southern border wall with Mexico and drastically increase the number of border patrol agents, blocking the flight of Central American asylum seekers and Mexicans fleeing devastating poverty and violence

- Increase detention centers for immigrants and immigrant families, especially around the border, that have an awful record of human rights violations

- Significantly increase the amount of ICE agents working in our communities, and reinstating the "Secure Communities" program, seeking greater cooperation between ICE and local law enforcement - destroying what trust exists between police and the immigrant community

- Expanding the infamous "287g" program which seeks to turn local law enforcement into federal immigration agents, creating grave concerns around racial and ethnic profiling

- Widen the detention and deportation dragnet for undocumented individuals, and curtail the rights of non-citizens to due process in court

- Punish cities that seek to protect their immigrant residents by taking away crucial federal funding from local communities

*We are still uncertain about the future of the DACA program, and other hopes for larger immigration reforms.

*Here is a helpful link for understanding more on how this order may affect our immigrant neighbors and friends.

2nd Executive Order:

Sadly, Trump signed yet another incredibly harmful executive order, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, that:
- Places a hold on all refugee resettlement for 4 months, and indefinitely bans the resettlement of Syrian refugees - closing our doors to people fleeing horrific war, violence, and discrimination, whose lives depend upon finding a safe, compassionate country to welcome them.
- Significantly reduces the number of refugees to be resettled in the US in 2017, and creates more "extreme vetting" measures for refugee resettlement into the future.
- Blocks all immigrants and refugees from coming to the US from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, and Yemen for 3 months - separating families, and spreading fear and stereotypes about people from Muslim countries.
These constiutionally questionable orders may especially affect immigrants and refugees in Greensboro who still have family and friends in the targeted countries, as well as our diverse Muslim community who may feel a greater sense of discrimination and alienation created by these orders. It may also directly affect all of the wonderful agencies who help resettle refugees in the Triad area, and many others who serve and advocate alongside them that also need our support.

Both of these orders deeply concerning for all of us, but this is not the end of the story.......there is hope.
1) Many legal and immigrant rights organizations have and will continue to challenge these orders in court.
2) Secure communities and 287g programs are voluntary. Local law enforcement should continue to protect and build trust with all residents.
3) City councils and mayors can push back against these orders and stand their ground as welcoming cities
4) Congressional and Senate leaders can put pressure on the President to reverse these policies
5) YOU!  You are a big part of the hope, and we hope to see you at any and all of the upcoming events to learn more, and speak out and take action together!
