Ms. Genevieve Young Hitt - A Cryptologic Pioneer

Many of you will recognize this photo from our website and social media posts. This is the Hitt Family. Genevieve and Col. Parker Hitt, along with their daughter Mary Lueise, and their beloved family dogs. Genevieve was a true cryptologic mom! Her daughter was only four when Genevieve went off to do important and quite non-traditional work. Genevieve is often considered the U.S. government's first female cryptologist. Mostly self-taught, she had a clear knack for code-breaking, but it was work she came into somewhat by chance. Mary Lueise followed in her mother's footsteps, later working for William Friedman at Arlington Hall Station, breaking codes during WWII. Genevieve not only inspired her daughter, but paved the way for future generations of female codebreakers and cyber experts.

Welcome to a special NCF Web Link celebrating Mother's Day 2021.
As we salute all the traditional Moms out there, we recognize there are many kinds of "Moms." Perhaps you are "like a Mom" to someone in your life or someone has been "like a Mom" for you? Maybe you've mentored young people with the loving guidance of a Mom, or been a grateful mentee. Or maybe you have been a loving dog or cat Mom! To all the "mothers" in the National Cryptologic Foundation family, we wish you a very “Happy Mother’s Day!”
The National Cryptologic Foundation often focuses our mission-related goals specifically on girls and women. For example, we have hosted a variety of #CyberChats focused on women in cryptology and cyber. As we continue to grow our education programming to instill the excitement of cyber education in K-12 students, we will hopefully bring more women into our community.
We also continually honor, as well as strive to learn from the trailblazing women of the past - true pioneers in cryptology - who paved the way for today's women in cyber. Take a look at our Female Pioneers page for many examples.
The Foundation has an In Memoriam Registry to honor people who served in the cryptologic community. In addition, anyone can make their donation an In Honor of or In Memory of donation, as a tribute for a family member, friend, or colleague. Dr. Loyce Pailen

If ever there was a passionate cyber Mom, Dr. Loyce Pailen would likely win the award. Dr. Pailen's "Super-Momness" has extended beyond her own family to children and students all around the world, especially with her very creative and engaging children's book series - Super Cybersecurity Grandma that aims to interest and educate children about a variety of cybersecurity topics.
Dr. Pailen is a doctor of management and senior director of the Center for Security Studies at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). She has more than 35 years of experience in information technology, including work in cybersecurity, software development, project management, telecommunications, risk management, and network and systems security and administration. Our 2021 Spring Cryptologic Program will take place virtually via Zoom webinar on 13 May at 11am EDT, and will feature Dr. Robert Spalding, Brig Gen, USAF (Ret).
Dr. Spalding's presentation, “What’s to Follow in 2021? From Coronavirus to Taiwan – the new Chinese Communist Party," will focus on his recent and very timely book, Stealth War: How China Took Over While America’s Elite Slept.

  • 18 May, 1pm EDT: Security Clearances: Your Past Impacts Your Future: Jennifer Munt, Education and Workforce Director at the Ft. Meade Alliance will introduce students to the Intelligence Community, and explore security clearances. 
  • 25 May, 2pm EDT: How Cryptology Helped Win the Battle of Midway: We will discuss critical elements that allowed the U.S. to turn the tide; from the widely discussed naval battle to the under-emphasized (but vital) role of US Navy cryptology. Will Sciandra, a First Class Cadet (Senior) at the Virginia Military Institute, will discuss how cryptology still plays a major role in cyber.
