How do Christians recharge?
How do Christians recharge?
January 18, 2016
Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
New International Version (NIV)
“You have to rest while you run.”  So my very fast running partner told me as I prepared to run a marathon.  Another friend said, “That is not possible.”  Yesterday, on a day which fairly shouted the glories of our God, thousands of runners ran over 26 miles through the streets of Houston.  I think I know how they feel today, but I wonder if they rested while they ran.
Jesus sent his disciples out to do the work of his kingdom.  Even God’s work, especially God’s work can consume us.  We have started 2016 as we always do, with great ambitions and high hopes.  At some point, we may find our exhaustion overtaking our exhilaration.  Like our fitbits, we have to be recharged to work.  So how do Christians recharge?
“Come to me . . .”  So many in Jesus’ world turned relationship into rules.  Jesus offered a better way.  The way of his kingdom is not the way of “panting feverishness.”  Jesus offers rest for our souls.  We can’t earn this rest – it is a gift.  Will we receive it today?
Pray with me:
Father, today we come to you for rest.  We can’t find it in any other person or place.  We have exhausted ourselves trying to make life work.  Now we come to you in your gentleness and humility, taking your yoke upon ourselves.  Help us to be still and know that you alone are God.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
