Election Resources and Support

As election day approaches, our students may experience a range of emotions that could impact our learning environments. Many faculty and instructors are considering how best to support both their students and the campus community through this period.

First, let’s acknowledge that each of us brings our own lived experiences and emotions to this moment. Our capacity to engage in election-related conversations will vary widely. Please take a moment to reflect on your own feelings as you consider the most suitable approach for your course and teaching style.

Second, the University has several resources available to you and our students. Please consider utilizing resources from the UTLC and others as we enter the next phase of this election cycle.

UTLC Resource: Teaching During and Post-Election This resource outlines how the election may influence students’ capacity to participate in learning and offers practical strategies for teaching, planning, and support.
Student Event: What’s Now? What’s Next? On Thursday, November 7th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in EUC Alexander, OLCE and the Office of Intercultural Engagement will hold a post-election event. Students are invited to process the election results, with lunch provided and trained dialogue facilitators and counselors available for support.

Additionally, if you’d like assistance in developing a plan specific to your course, please consider a consultation with UTLC. If you supervise Graduate Teaching Assistants/Associates, please take some time to check-in with them this week, as they may be new to teaching and need support processing what they are seeing in the learning environment.

Finally, please keep in mind the University’s Political Activities Guidelines. While emotions may be heightened, we must uphold our role as a public institution.
