Last week, we announced a substantial change to our mask policy — an important next step in taking a guidelines-driven approach to managing COVID-19. We acknowledge that the distinction between required versus optional settings can be a bit fuzzy. Here are answers to some of the common questions we’ve received:
What is the new mask policy?
Generally speaking, if you are in a setting where physical attendance is required, mask-wearing is required. If you’re in a setting where attendance is not required or there’s another option for attendance (eg, attending by zoom), mask-wearing is not required.
Here is the full policy and guidance on mask-wearing.
Are masks required to enter NYU buildings?
No, unless otherwise noted with signage or directed by a Campus Safety Officer or other staff member. Bobst Library is one such exception.
Are masks required in spaces that people walk through briefly to get to other spaces?
Mask-wearing is optional in building entryways, hallways, and elevators.
Where must I always wear a mask?
Here are the locations where masks must still be worn:
- Classrooms or other instructional spaces
- Meetings, huddles, or events in which in-person participation is obligatory
- Workplaces
- All library facilities
- University transportation, such as NYU shuttle buses and Safe Ride
- Healthcare settings, including the Student Health Center
Are masks required in workplace settings where it is obligatory for one person, but discretionary (optional) for another?
It depends.
- If individuals are passing through the space to get to another space (e.g., passing a campus safety desk or other open workspace) or completing a quick transaction (e.g., making a purchase, dropping off a package), masking is optional for those brief interactions.
- If there is prolonged contact (e.g., employees are required to work an event that is optional for students), then masking is likely required.
Look for signage or direction from staff. Use common sense, and remember that context is important. A room in Kimmel being used for a meeting where attendance is optional doesn’t require mask-wearing; if the same room is used for a class, where attendance is mandatory, then mask-wearing is required during the required class.
I’m still a bit confused. Will I get in trouble if I’m not wearing a mask when I should be?
Not if you are making a good faith effort. You should be prepared to have a mask available whenever you are on-campus or participating in off-campus University-sponsored activities so that you can comply should you be requested to put on a mask. If you comply when asked, you won’t be subject to disciplinary action.
Do I still need to bring a mask to campus or other University-sponsored events?
We strongly recommend that all members of the NYU community have an acceptable mask available to you when coming on campus or when planning to participate in an off-campus event, given that there are certain settings in which masks are still required.
