Dear Graduate Students,
We are pleased to announce the call for student registration for the Summer Session 2024 Summer Graduate Teaching Scholars Program (SGTS). This program provides opportunities for some of our top graduate students to gain mentored teaching experience while serving as an instructor of record for a UC San Diego undergraduate course. This is an excellent professional development program for graduate students interested in teaching. Additionally, the program increases Summer Session course offerings and provides undergraduate students the opportunity to take courses taught by advanced graduate students who have an interest in teaching.
The program has recently been restructured in order to provide opportunities to more students. Departments no longer have to nominate students. Graduate students who will advance to candidacy by the end of winter 2024 are invited to register directly for this professional development program and teach in the summer as Summer Graduate Teaching Scholars. Students who participate will receive $500 for completing the professional development workshops, and receive salary as an Associate Instructor for teaching a course in Summer 2024.
The registration link, complete eligibility information, and more information about the restructured program can be found on the SGTS website, and below the signature block. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023. Please contact Hailey Caraballo at hlcaraballo@ucsd.edu if you have questions about the program.
With best regards,
Elizabeth H. Simmons

The program comprises three components: (1) SGTS training, (2) summer course commitments, and (3) engaging with a mentor.
1) To complete the SGTS training component, graduate students must have a proposed summer course to teach with department approval and register for the pedagogy program offerings led by the Engaged Teaching Hub of the Teaching and Learning Commons (TLC). Upon completion of the SGTS training requirements, students will receive a $500 stipend and a certificate of completion for Student-Centered College Teaching & Course Design.
2) To complete the summer course commitment component, graduate students must prepare for (SGTS training) their course, teach their course, meet with their mentor, participate in support activities led by the TLC, and submit a reflection statement. Upon completion of the summer course commitments students will be named Summer Graduate Teaching Scholars, receive a Letter of Recognition of Expertise in Teaching, and will receive the regular Summer Session salary as Associate Instructors.
3) Mentorship is crucial to the program. Mentors must commit to the mentor contract. The mentor contract lists the mentoring responsibilities and confirms the mentor's participation in the program. Students must submit the mentor contract for their program registration to be complete. Mentors must submit a reflection statement at the end of the summer. Upon submission of the reflection statement, mentors will receive $200 in a discretionary account.
In the Fall quarter following the teaching assignment, the SGTS committee will select up to five scholars and five mentors to receive recognition as outstanding summer graduate teaching scholars and mentors. Recognized scholars will receive a $1,000 stipend. Recognized mentors will receive $1,000 in a discretionary fund.
Enrollment into the SGTS program is limited to students who have not previously participated in the SGTS program. Preference will go to students with a confirmed teaching assignment for Summer 2024 and who have an identified teaching mentor. Otherwise, students will be accepted based on the order in which they sign up until the enrollment limit is reached. Eligible students will be notified before the winter break.
Please visit the SGTS website for program information and details regarding eligibility, enrollment criteria, guidance on the components outlined above, and the online registration form.
