Buddy Experience

The buddy experience is a program run by commuter students for first-year commuters. How does it work, you ask? Before Commuter Prep Day, you can look through the google slides that the upperclassmen have created and pick your top 3 (or 5, or 14, whatever floats ya boat) and just write their names in the last section of the Commuter Prep Day sign up form. Then for the rest of the semester, your buddy will be your direct contact to any problems, questions or midnight paper due at midnight crisis you may have and just a friendly face to say hi to! It’s a great way to meet other commuters, get involved, and make new friends!

Required Activities for New Commuter Students

Convocation

Convocation is the first official gathering of the Class of 2022, where you'll be welcomed by President Crawford and key student leaders, and hear from our Convocation speaker. This year's speaker is Miami Alum and nationally recognized writer and historian Wil Haygood, who will discuss his new book, Tigerland. Tigerland is the true story of a basketball team from a segregated school in 1960's Columbus, OH, and relates to the summer reading material in its focus on racism and civil rights. New students will receive a copy of Tigerland at Convocation.Commuters will meet at 8:30am at the Armstrong Student Center Shade Family Room (front entrance) to walk over together. After Convocation, all students will meet in summer reading workshop groups (check your email for your assigned location).

Summer Reading Discussions

Locations: various locations (refer to your Miami email)
After Convocation, meet with your assigned group and faculty/staff facilitator to discuss our Summer Reading Program book, Hillbilly Elegy, and the Convocation remarks by speaker Steve Williams. All students will receive an email with your summer reading room location; on-campus residents also receive a postcard at residence hall check-in with that same information. If you need additional direction, visit the Information Table at Convocation (located near the steps of Kreger Hall). Students must read 2-3 articles from each section

It Is My Place

Location: Commuters meet at the east central entrance of Millett Hall at 2:15pm (entrance closest to the large parking lot; a commuter student leader will meet you there).

All new students are expected to attend this important and engaging program, where you'll see a performance about expectations for your new community and key campus resources. Bring your Miami ID to swipe in.

Mega Fair

The 2018 Fall Mega Fair is scheduled for Wednesday - August 29, 2018 (Rain Date - Wednesday, September 5, 2018) from 6-9 pm on Slant Walk at Miami.
Mega Fair is a massive student organization fair. Leaders from many of Miami's 500+ student clubs and organizations set up shop to let other students know who they are, what they do, and how to join. You'll find student performances, free food samples and giveaways, and a wealth of information at Mega Fair. The event is a great way to jump-start your involvement on campus!

2018 Fall Mini-Mega Fairs

Date:  Tuesday, September 4, 2018 through Thursday, September 6, 2018 and Tuesday, September 11, 2018 through Thursday, September 13, 2018
Time:  11:00am to 2:00pmLocation:  Armstrong Student Center East Atrium

Mini-Mega Fairs (formerly Student Organization Showcases) debuted in Fall 2017 as weekly events to show off student organizations and help recruit new members. These mini-fairs include a themed student organization fair (similar to Mega Fair on a much smaller scale). Mini-Mega Fairs give students the chance to meet student organizations and get involved without the overwhelming crowds of Mega Fair.

For any questions, feel free to email studentactivities@MiamiOH.edu.

Summer Reading Program

This year's Summer Reading Program invites students to engage with several texts and multimedia resources that share the themes of civil rights and social justice found in Tigerland.

The 2018 Summer Reading Program provides a special opportunity to engage with multiple texts. Later this month, you will receive a copy of Tigerland: 1968-1969: A City Divided, A Nation Torn Apart, and a Magical Season of Healing, written by Miami alumnus Wil Haygood ('76). Miami students will be the first to receive Tigerland, which is being made available for special early delivery before the book is officially released in October. Over the summer, Miami students will engage with several texts and multimedia resources which share the themes of civil rights and social justice found in Tigerland.  Students must read 2-3 articles from each section, as described on the website.

On Tuesday August 28, we will be hosting our first event for the semester, Commuter Center Bingo. We will have coffee and pastries from 8 am-11:45 am and Bingo will start at noon.
