I know this community is intentional and generous about finding ways to support each other, but I am truly blown away by the incredible outpouring of support from individuals, families, clubs, teams, neighborhoods, and businesses. You are finding creative, compassionate ways to get food on the tables of those who need it the most. You are making a difference.
During this time of crisis, you all stepped right up. Below is a summary of how and where you can continue to help. But first, I want you to know exactly how your donations are being used.
Starting this week, we have increased our output for all of our Community Food Kit locations. Each family is now receiving extra bags of shelf-stable food and we are adding "extras" like full sacks of potatoes and fresh produce. We're also serving a greater number of families at every site. Our Board of Directors continues to meet regularly to assess how we can meet both the breadth and depth of need across the Northland.
Additionally, in just the last few weeks, we have approved seven new School Pantries bringing us up to our current maximum of 50 schools served through this program. Each pantry provides ready-to-eat snacks and meals for students, as well as items students can take home to support family meals — box dinners, pasta and sauce, peanut butter, cereal, and more.
We estimate these expansions will increase our costs by $10,000-15,000 per month and the question we get asked often is: How long can we sustain this? While no one knows when SNAP benefits will come back on line for families, one thing is certain. Our Board and supporters like you are determined to continue nourishing children and youth in the Northland for as long as it takes.
Your cash, check, and online donations go directly to purchase more food for our Community Food Kits. Your food donations are going directly to the shelves of School Pantries. Full stop.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for stepping up and standing with Feed Northland Kids.
With continued gratitude and hope,
Gwen O'Brien, LCSW
