This message is being sent to all Duke undergraduate, graduate and professional students:
Dear Students,
At about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Duke Police were called to a parked, locked, unoccupied vehicle in a Blue Zone parking lot that a caller reported contained gun parts and bullets. Inside the vehicle, officers found and secured parts of airsoft guns, which are a type of BB gun, all of which were confiscated. Duke Police responded immediately and established within minutes of the call that there was no threat to campus. Additionally, the university has followed up with the owner of the vehicle.
We understand that this situation caused alarm, and we are grateful for the proactive efforts of our safety-minded community. We commend the individual who alerted Duke Police for their vigilance and commitment to safety. Safety concerns should always be reported directly to Duke Police as we work together to maintain a safe environment for all.
Sincerely,
John Dailey
