ICTS Director Named as Inaugural Larry J. Shapiro Distinguished Professor in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences |
William Powderly, MD, ICTS Director and Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Science at WashU Medicine, has made major contributions to research in understanding the role of opportunistic infections in people living with HIV/AIDS and leading clinical trials of new therapies for the prevention and control of such infections. He is also recognized as an outstanding mentor and leader for faculty development and training programs and has served on the editorial boards of multiple major infectious diseases journals.

The ICTS Research Development Program will host the Winter NIH Mock Study Section (MSS) for clinical and translational grants on Wednesday, November 18, 2026. Participants will be able to:
- Learn about the NIH process
- Make your NIH R, K or F series grant competitive
- Receive timely feedback
Letters of Intent due: September 23, 2026 (by 5pm CT)
Full proposals (if invited) due: October 14, 2026 (by 5pm CT)
Mock Study Section: November 18, 2026 (8:00am - 5:00pm CT) (Zoom virtual meeting – invitation only)

Clinical Research Training Center (CRTC) Introduces Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Course within Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) Curriculum |
|
|
|
CLNV 5000 satisfies NIH, NSF, and other federal agency's requirements for instruction in the responsible conduct of research. The course provides practical knowledge and skills for the responsible conduct of research, spanning issues of authorship; peer review; data confidentiality, management, sharing, and ownership; human subjects protections; collaboration; mentor-mentee relationships; conflicts of interest; research misconduct; and safe and supportive research environments. Seminars are held every Tuesday at 4:00pm from August 25 through December 1, 2026. Registration is open now through August 21, 2026.

Join the CRTC for a university-wide training session with Randy Olson, PhD as he presents on the ABT (And, But, Therefore) Framework — a simple, powerful tool used by scientists, communicators, and policymakers worldwide to make complex ideas clear and compelling. Attendees will learn how to apply the ABT Framework to strengthen grant proposals, manuscript abstracts, presentations, and everyday scientific communication. The keynote and the hands-on workshops will be offered both in person at the EPNEC Auditorium and Seminar Rooms and live via Zoom on September 22-23, 2026. Registration is required.

The NextGen Clinical Trial Investigator Training is one-day in-person educational program designed for investigators who currently lead or would like to lead clinical trials. The series includes lectures and panel discussions aimed to define the regulatory, operational and ethical components of clinical trials, with the goal of developing a skilled workforce that provides the highest level of patient safety, teamwork and data quality. The in-person training will be held at the University of Missouri on October 9, 2026 from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Genomics in Medicine Seminar Series Set to Return for Fall 2026
The Genomics in Medicine seminar series offers attendees a practical background in molecular biology and genetics, an introduction to genomics technologies and research, and an understanding of the clinical application of genomics knowledge, and is designed for clinicians and other interested persons, including basic science researchers, students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral scholars, and anyone else who wishes to learn more about these topics from WashU Medicine faculty experts. Seminars will be held every Monday at 4:00pm from August 24 through November 30, 2026.

This workshop builds a strong foundation in computational genomics while developing practical skills for modern genomic research. Participants will learn best-practice analytical approaches, explore emerging technologies, and apply AI-assisted workflows to improve the efficiency, reproducibility, and interpretation of genomic analyses from an interdisciplinary team of faculty and researchers with decades of experience across computational biology, genomics, and translational research. The course is held in person at 10:00am on Monday mornings during the academic year. Lectures are recorded and posted for reference.

Telehealth has become an essential tool in healthcare, supporting remote enrollment, treatment monitoring, and measurements that previously required the patient to travel to a site. The arrival of AI could bring significant changes to “trial operations”. This talk will be held on August 12, 2026 and seeks to confront what we have gained, what we have lost, and what we’re about to break, unless telehealth and clinical teams work to help actively shape the emerging AI-enabled trial ecosystem.
