Countdown to “Mission: Homecoming 2026” is underway at UAH! The annual celebration of Charger spirit and traditions blasts off Wednesday, Feb. 18, and runs full throttle through Sunday, Feb. 22.
The Office of Student Life, in partnership with the UAH Alumni Association and UAH Athletics, invites family and friends to join students, alumni, faculty and staff in this showcase of Charger campus culture and achievements.

Excellence Awards! | UAH has introduced the Sapphire Excellence Awards, a new annual program recognizing alumni, partners and supporters whose leadership and service advance UAH and its impact locally and beyond.
The awards span five categories, including Distinguished Alumni Fellows, Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD), Presidential Community Award, Charger Champion Award and Research Impact Award.
Nominations close Feb. 20. Honorees will be recognized at a campus gala in April.

Dr. Emil Jovanov chosen as Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors |
Dr. Emil Jovanov, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at UAH, has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the highest professional distinction awarded solely to academic inventors.
“Dr. Emil Jovanov’s career exemplifies the very best of academic innovation and impact,” says Dr. Aleksandar Milenkovic, ECE department chair and professor. “His pioneering work in wearable health technologies and wireless body area networks has helped shape an entire field, while his dedication to students, colleagues and the university has left an enduring legacy at UAH. His election as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors is a fitting recognition of a career defined by vision, rigor and service.”

UAH’s second annual MLK Leadership Breakfast focuses on ways to improve health care for all
|
UAH hosted its 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Breakfast on Wednesday, Jan. 14. The event featured Catherine Coleman Flowers, founding director of the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice (CREEJ), as keynote speaker.
The theme of the breakfast – Shaping the Healthcare Community of the Future – encompassed Flowers’ work as well as the mission of the UAH College of Nursing and its new UAH Neighborhood Nursing initiative. The program also featured a discussion with Flowers and Dr. Leon Lewis, Huntsville Hospital Health System; Tamika Alexander, WHNT-19 anchor, moderated the panel.

Dr. Lee Ellenburg appointed new Alabama state climatologist |
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Dr. Lee Ellenburg as the state’s new climatologist. The appointment marks a leadership transition for the Alabama Office of the State Climatologist, which is housed within The University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Earth System Science Center (ESSC) and serves as a primary source of climate monitoring, analysis and information for the state. Ellenburg succeeds Dr. John Christy, director of the ESSC, who has served as state climatologist since 2000.
“I am deeply honored to be named the Alabama state climatologist,” Ellenburg says. “Serving Alabama in this role allows me to bring more than a decade of applied climate and water research into direct service of the state.”

Military Appreciation Night is Feb. 7 |
UAH Athletics is excited to celebrate Military and Veterans Appreciation Night during the Gulf South Conference men's and women's basketball doubleheader at SportsMED Arena in Spragins Hall on Saturday, Feb. 7. We will welcome local military leaders and groups for special celebrations throughout both games.
The women's game tips off at 2 p.m., while the men's game begins at 4 p.m. Limited reserved seating is available through HomeTown Ticketing. General admission seating upstairs is free courtesy of Bentley Buick GMC.

Business of Space Conference happens Mar. 1-3 |
The third annual Business of Space Conference brings together top academics, industry leaders, innovators and policymakers to explore how the burgeoning space economy is moving beyond Earth while remaining within reach of today’s markets and institutions. Attendees will engage in keynotes, panels and collaborative discussions that address real business, economic and policy challenges in this rapidly evolving sector. Registration closes Thursday, Feb. 26.
