Harry's Corner Lottery This is the first year Elysian had a weighted lottery. The weighted lottery gives children who are demonstrably economically disadvantaged an extra chance to gain entrance through our lottery system. The chart below summarizes the results of the lottery. Because, by law, we are required to give residents of Hoboken priority, we create two lists—Hoboken and Out of Hoboken. a. The “Total Applicants” column gives the total number of applicants who applied to the 2018-19 lottery and compares that to the total number of applicants from the previous year. b. The “Total # of Weighted Lottery” column indicates the number of applicants who qualified for the weighted lottery based upon income levels. Each of these children had his/her name entered into the lottery twice. c. The “1st Weighted Lottery Number” column indicates the number drawn that, in that particular grade, was the first economically disadvantage student to be selected.

| A Statement About the Lottery Because of a technical problem with the way our new online application system worked, four prospective kindergarten children and one first grader had their names left out of the lottery. We were able to verify these names through the technological footprint that was left. Based upon consultations with our lawyer and with the Department of Education we came up with a fair way to ensure that these applicants were included in the lottery. We held a second “dummy” lottery with place holders for all of the applicants who had previously been in the lottery and then added these names into the “dummy” lottery. They were then slotted in to the lottery lists at their correct spot. We also guaranteed that no child who had already been accepted would lose a spot. We had a buffer on this because of spots kept open for possible holdovers and spots made available based upon turndowns. We do apologize for the disruption and concern that this caused families. We feel that this was a fair resolution, allowing everyone who entered the lottery a fair opportunity to become part of our community.

Auction Items Needed!
Do you have an item, experience, or special opportunity you’d like to donate to Friends of Elysian for our upcoming 2018 Party and Auction?
Or, would you be willing to ask local stores, restaurants, and business contacts for items?
Our goal is to have a variety of items that can help raise significant funds for the school and we can only do that with your help. We are ideally seeking new items or special experiences, valued at roughly $200 or more. (However, if something is less than that, unique, or you are unsure of the value, please don't hesitate to email us at friends@ecsnj.org.)
Additionally, if you'd be willing to help in the procurement of items from local businesses, please drop us a line at the email address above so we can get you started.
Please know that while we hope to be able to include all donations, we may not be able to accommodate all items, or may need to group items together.
Thank you very much for your consideration of this request and for your support!
