Nine CTY Scholars Bound for Selective Colleges
|
Congratulations to the CTY Scholars Class of 2026! These nine scholars recently completed our four-year academic advising and college counseling program, which helps to close the opportunity gap for bright students from limited-income households. Together, these students earned admission to 46 colleges and a collective $1.7 million in scholarships. This fall, they will attend prestigious institutions such as Caltech, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Smith College. Learn more about the program.

| CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars Mark Year of Learning and Fun
|
In late May, 150 Baltimore City Public Schools students and family members gathered to wrap up another amazing year of the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars program. The free enrichment program serves 300 students in grades kindergarten through 5 annually, offering interdisciplinary courses not typically taught in traditional curricula. The end-of-year ceremony featured guest speakers, certificate presentations, and of course cupcakes! Read more about the event.

New Leader Spearheads CTY Research and Evaluation
|
CTY is delighted to welcome Ashley S. Flynn, EdD, as director of research and evaluation. She will lead CTY’s research, testing, and evaluation efforts, helping ensure our programming is evidence-based and meets advanced learners’ needs. Previously, Flynn served as section chief of research and data at the Maryland State Department of Education and as associate director of research and special initiatives at CTY. She is excited to support CTY’s work with advanced learners from all backgrounds. Learn more about CTY research.

CTY Alumnus Commands the Future of Cybersecurity
|
Dan Guido ’98–’01 was always curious about technology, and CTY courses helped him build a foundation in programming. In fact, he enjoyed Data Structures and Algorithms so much that he took it twice.
“CTY introduced me to the Little Man Computer, where I first learned about computer architecture, something I would have missed if I had gone straight into programming,” he said.

Guido’s focus has kept him at computing’s forefront. He co-founded Trail of Bits, a cybersecurity firm that researches vulnerabilities and builds secure software for clients like Meta and Zoom. He also gives back by sponsoring competitions and scholarships and by teaching the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. Learn more.

| A Summer of Science at CTY’s New Florida Day Site
|
During the school year, Paul Cornett teaches science to approximately 420 pre-K through fifth-grade students at Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Fla. This summer, he joins the CTY staff at its new location at his school to teach Cloudy with a Chance of Science.
“I was familiar with CTY because I’ve had students who had outstanding experiences attending the program at other sites,” he said.

“CTY’s Cloudy with a Chance of Science course will allow me to try new investigations, include hands-on learning, and incorporate children’s literature,” Cornett continued. “I can’t wait to see where this group of students takes their learning during our time together.”

Former Students and Instructors Continue to Support CTY
|
Marc Howard ’99–’04 and Miriam Melnick ’08 didn’t know one another at CTY, but they bonded over their shared love of computer science at Columbia University. They returned to CTY to teach Introduction to Robotics and pioneered a new course, Advanced Robotics, bringing foundational software engineering skills to older CTY students. Today, these Google software engineering leads remain strong supporters of the program.

“Both of us use our CTY skills—collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and cooperation—every day,” Howard said. “We want others to have the chance to cultivate their love of math and science and to learn important life skills like independence, social connection, and time management through CTY.”
