Undergraduate Research Assistant Program (URA-H, URA-SBS, and URA-STEM)
The URA programs are designed to provide meaningful work-study opportunities to students who may not have the opportunity to engage with non-compensated research activities. By engaging in mentored research and scholarship, students have the potential to experience the transformative nature of research, as well as develop academic and professional skills.
Award: The award provides research assistants with a paid wage for 8-10 hours of work for one to two semesters. The wage is determined by OURS in consultation with Financial Aid and the faculty supervisor. URA positions generally fall within Classification 5, Steps A-D, according to the Student Employment guidelines.
Eligibility: The URA award is available to all tenure and tenure-track faculty in the Humanities (URA-H), the Social and Behavioral Sciences (URA-SBS), and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (URA-STEM). Preference is given to faculty who have been at GVSU for at least one year and have an interest in building their research in a way that engages undergraduate students.
All work-study students are eligible to apply for these positions. URA selection is done primarily by the faculty with approval from OURS. Please note that the URA grant cannot be awarded to support an independent study (499), or an Honors Thesis.
Kindschi Undergraduate Research Fellowship in the Sciences
The Kindschi Undergraduate Research Fellowship in the Sciences provides financial support to students pursuing rigorous, independent scholarship during the academic year, mentored by a faculty member in one of the following areas: aquatic sciences, allied health professions, biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, information systems, mathematics, movement science, physics, and statistics. Proposals related to the Barbara Kindschi Greenhouse are also encouraged.
Award: The award provides students with a paid fellowship per semester, or per academic year, a $500 project supplies budget per semester, and a $500 dissemination fund.
Eligibility: The fellowship is available to undergraduate students at GVSU who have not completed the requirements for graduation. It is preferred that the student will be enrolled at GVSU as an undergraduate for at least one full semester of study beyond the period of the award. Successful applicants generally have a 3.0 GPA or higher in their major. Please note that this fellowship cannot be awarded to support an independent study (399 or 499), or an Honors Thesis.
All tenured, tenure-track, visiting, and affiliate faculty are eligible to mentor Kindschi Fellows.
Alayont Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Mathematics
The Alayont Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Mathematics has been developed to provide financial support to students pursuing rigorous, independent scholarship during the academic year, mentored by a faculty member.
Award: The award provides student fellows with a $2,500 fellowship for approximately 10 hours per week for an academic semester.
Eligibility: The fellowship is available to undergraduate students at GVSU who are majoring or minoring in mathematics and have not yet completed the requirements for graduation. It is preferred that the student will be enrolled at GVSU as an undergraduate for at least one full semester of study beyond the period of the award. Successful applicants generally have a 3.0 GPA or higher in their major. Please note that this fellowship cannot be awarded to support an independent study (MTH 499), or an Honors Thesis.
