1 Samuel 20:17
And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.
New International Version (NIV)
“Friendship is a sheltering tree,” wrote Samuel Taylor Coleridge.  In whose shelter do you live?  David lived in the shelter of Jonathan, the son of Saul.  While Saul set out to kill David, Jonathan decided to save him, even at the risk of his own future position as king.

Have you ever had a friend like Jonathan?  Our Facebook accounts say we have hundreds of friends.  Which ones would lay down their lives for us?  Which ones will not look at their watches during our funerals?  Access to technology offers us more contact with people but insulates us from actual conversations.  Loneliness sweeps across our souls.

The Friend who sticks closer than a brother knows all about us and still loves us.  Jesus, too, gave up his throne for us.  He showed the greatest love by laying down his life for us.  When we receive his gift of friendship, he changes the way we make friends and treat our friends.  By his grace we no longer befriend others for what they can do for us.  Instead, we wonder what we might do for them.
 Pray with me:
Father, we have found a friend in Jesus.  Help us to show others that they have a friend in us.  Let our love for you and all of our neighbors reveal your love to the world today.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
