How do cities get their names?  Our city is named for Sam Houston.  This early Texas Baptist was a character.  When the pastor baptized him, he said he felt sorry for the fish downstream.  

Philadelphia means City of Brotherly Love.  During the World Series, some Houstonians wondered aloud if the name was accurate.  Apparently not all the residents live up to the name.

Jerusalem was named Jebus when the Canaanite's controlled it.  Jebusites taunted David when he set out to conquer it.  The name Jerusalem ends with the word for peace.  I thought of that when we stood in Peace Park outside the city.  To this day people pray for the peace of the city.

Ezekiel envisioned a city named "The Lord is There."  I want to live in that city.  "Where do you live?" "The Lord is there."  How would we live this day if we knew we were constantly in his presence?  Let's live that way.  Some people think God is nowhere. We believe God is now here!
Pray with me:
Father, help us to practice your presence today.  Let us live our life, giving full attention to you.  We pray for the peace of Jerusalem and the peace of Houston.  Help us not to vandalize the Shalom.  In Jesus' name  Amen.
