Dear Alumni and Friends:
Yet another noteworthy year is coming to an end, and after spending close to three decades here at Miami, the transition into a new year is as captivating to me as ever. I wanted to take the time to reach out to you with a wrap-up of some highlights from the past few months here at the College of Arts and Science (CAS).
This past summer, CAS students embarked on numerous study away and abroad programs and internships, many of which were in collaboration with Miami alumni -- Ohio Public Leaders, Inside Washington, Inside New York, Inside London, and more. We then began the 2017-18 academic year on a high note by welcoming about 3,900 new students to campus, the largest and most diverse in Miami's history. We also welcomed ## new tenure-track faculty members who will help shape student experiences for years to come.
With your generous help, we've also made great progress on two major donation campaigns this year: one for the Humanities Center, which is close to raising its required $1.5 million for a NEH Challenge Grant, and another $1.5 million for our newly named Sue J. Henry Center for Pre-law Education.
Science has changed, and the way we teach science has changed, so in order to provide our students cutting-edge educational experiences we have to modernize our lab space. That's why we're in the midst of another important fundraising campaign: the renovation of Pearson Hall, home to our Biology and Microbiology departments.
Phase 1, wrapping up next fall, will offer a spacious front entrance that opens up into a beautiful atrium. Most of the modernized labs will also be ready for use. Pearson's Phase 2, pending funding, is slated for completion in summer 2020 and will incorporate a more open, collaborative, and inviting environment for students and visitors. Donor opportunities for our Pearson Hall renovation project, including named spaces, are available. For details, contact me or our senior director of development, Evan Lichtenstein.
Finally, beginning at the end of this upcoming January, we will reach out to you more regularly with shorter updates to showcase notable CAS achievements every month throughout the year. This will allow us to keep you better informed and connected.
Thank you for all the support you provide for CAS and our students. I wish you a healthy and happy holiday season!

Geography's mapathon unites faculty and students to help provide aid to Puerto Rico
Written by Bonnie Meibers, CAS communications intern
While the hurricane in Puerto Rico and its lasting effects may feel far away from Oxford, Ohio, Miami's Department of Geography decided to do something about it.
On Friday, September 29, the department applied its expertise in mapping and resource management to host a special mapathon to help the victims of Hurricane Maria.
Assistant professor of geography and American studies Damon Scott, who has Puerto Rican in-laws, organized the event, which brought together faculty members, students, and volunteers from across the Miami community. Continue reading about the geography mapathon.
