She Believed!
Huge news! The biggest news! This is the news for which the world has been waiting. It is bigger than sports, or countries, or politics. It is amazing news, joyful news. But there are unknown consequences to this news. Consequences that could threaten this young girl’s life. Consequences that could bring sorrow, disappointment, and dishonor to herself and those she loves. And how does Mary respond?
She asks one question – just one. She asks, “How?”
I would have had so many questions. I would have wanted to know “How?” But I would have also wanted to know “Why me?” “What will happen to me?” “What will my parents think?” and “What will Joseph do?” and so much more!
The angel answers her question, though I am not sure Mary fully understood. Even though she had the option to choose doubt, fear, and confusion, she didn’t. She chose to believe.
The angel then made another unbelievable announcement, another baby was already on the way — Elizabeth was pregnant. The joy that would have come from this announcement was indeed great. Elizabeth had been unable to conceive and was considered barren. This was a huge disgrace for that culture. But now, even though Elizabeth was beyond child-bearing age, she was pregnant!
The angel explains this before Mary asks. He says that nothing is impossible with God. A short statement but one packed with power and promise. And it helps to explain what Mary may not understand from this angelic visit: God is conveying that He has this all under control. He is faithful and able. He sees young Mary and values her. He tells her this wonderful news first.
Mary takes it all in and responds simply. “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” For Mary, there was nothing else she needed to know or consider. Her desire was to do what God asked of her. This was a big ask; crazy, exciting, and yet, terrifying ask. And she said a simple, “Yes.”
How can you say “Yes” to God today? Trust and follow Him with faith, like Mary. Believe the angels’ proclamation that nothing is impossible with God. What is God asking you to do? Trust Him and say, “Yes!”
