As we approach the holiday season it is a great time to reflect and appreciate the work of our vibrant academic community this year. We celebrate with you in your publication and grant success as you lead the way in combating infectious diseases and making ground-breaking discoveries.
It was wonderful to see our research community connecting in the many workshops, seminars and 'nourishing culture' lunches that were held throughout the year. We were particularly thrilled to see the personal and professional growth of our EMCR community as we launched our EMCR program this year, with many participants feeling like they now have a home within Sydney ID.
The Sydney ID Executive continued its national advocacy work for the Australian CDC developing the NSW capabilities document along with our UNSW and Kirby colleagues, highlighting the infectious diseases expertise in NSW. We look forward to these continued discussions next year.
We would like to congratulate our Sydney ID members who obtained new Horizon fellowships Dr Aaron Jenkins (Planetary Health) and Dr Kerrie Wiley (Social and behavioural drivers of immunisation and other infectious disease preventative measures). Sydney ID has supported both Aaron and Kerrie with their research over many years, so we are particuarly excited about their fellowships. We also look forward to welcoming Dr John Altin, Dr Archita Mishra, Dr Nick Fancourt and Dr Alice Peel into the Sydney ID family next year.
Happy 10th birthday to us! Did you know that we officially launched as the Marie Bashir Institute (MBI) in December 2013 and changed our name to the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute in September 2021? We've come along way since then and we couldn't do it without your ongoing support. Thank you for being part of our extraordinary infectious diseases community — we look forward to a fantastic 2024.
Here's to a festive season filled with happiness and a New Year brimming with endless opportunities.
