IN THE NEWS
Initiative in Seeking an International Internship in Physics Pays Off for Joseph Crandall, a recent GW double-major graduate (B.S. Physics, B.S. Computer Science (2017)) and current student in the Master of Science program in Electrical Engineering.
Joseph spent his summer interning at ITER Tokamak Water Cooling System division in Southern France. ITER is a multinational fusion research and engineering project. To obtain the internship,  Joseph talked and interviewed with different scientists and engineers at US ITER which is located at Oak Ridge National Lab, where he interned during the previous summer. The process of getting approval from GW, US ITER and the main ITER lab in France was long and took about 9 months to complete. However, Joseph’s initiative paid-off with an opportunity to work on a large scientific endeavor at the international level.
BLOGGER'S BOTTOM LINE
AN ADVENTURE IN BELIZE: A Three Credit Course in Paradise!
I'm excited to be part of a unique, first time experience as a career coaching instructor for a new and unique multidisciplinary, three (3) credit course studying climate, conservation, communication, and culture in BELIZE! Located on a coral reef, Belize is an idyllic Central American country north of Mexico and south and east of Guatemala. Its culture is a mixture of Mayan and Garifuna (African derivative) cultures. It has an abundance of terrestrial and marine species with a diverse ecosystem, including a rainforest, that makes the country an ideal place for academic discovery and documentation. Moreover, Belize is home to a Smithsonian research facility that is accessible to the course participants.
I am accompanying students as a member of a multidisciplinary team of instructors: Dr. Imani Cheers (team lead in Media and Communication) in SMPA, Dr. LaKeisha McClary (Chemistry) in CCAS, Ph. D Candidate Eve Boyle serving as the Teaching Assistant (Biological Anthropology), and me (Dr. Sonya Merrill) providing the instructional context of applying the experiential learning in Belize to career outcomes and the practical understanding of professionalism.
Designed to attract undergraduate students in science, engineering, communication, and environmental studies, the course will begin with three stateside sessions in the fall of 2017, in addition to an overview session in September, with two weeks of intensive instructional sessions, field trips, and cultural exposure starting on December 27, 2017 through January 12, 2018. Student participants will be expected to join a multidisciplinary team or work individually to develop a research and documentation project proposal and present the outcomes of their projects at the conclusion of the experience for a grade. The course content facilitates structured scientific observation and documentation and incorporates the career competencies of cross disciplinary communication (scientific and non-scientific), teamwork, and leadership.
Through readings, digital media, project assignments, class discussion, field trips, and assessment tools students will be able to evaluate their nontechnical skills in communication, leadership, and team building and critically examine their value sets as they apply these non-technical skills important to group dynamics to the field research experience. Emphasis will also be given to encouraging professionalism in communication and behaviors. Finally, students will be encouraged to create blogs of their experiences to share with the GW community.
By now, you should be as excited as I am by the prospects of this experience. If so, join us for an overview of the course on September 28, at 4 pm in SMPA 510. Students who decide to join us in Belize can register for the course through GW Passport here.
The cross-listed course numbers are: CCAS 2190 & SMPA 3193. Winter term financial aid can be used for this course!
See you in Belize!

This reimbursement, which cannot exceed $300.00, can be used only for necessarily unpaid internships, i.e., typically those internships with non-profit, governmental, educational, and non-governmental organizations that genuinely lack the financial resources to pay salaries or wages to their interns.
