Are you interested in attending medical school? Do you have questions about the day-to-day life of a medical school student? Then the Medical Student Panel is the place for you!
We will be speaking with 7 GW alumni who are all attending medical schools across the US. Please bring any questions that you have for our panelists, as there will be a Q&A section during the event. The Medical Student Panel will be held on Tuesday, October 29th from 4:00pm - 5:00pm via Zoom. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP below. We hope to see you there!

Early Selection Program Information Session
GW SMHS | December 4th from 12:00pm - 1:00pm
GWSMHS will host an EARLY SELECTION PROGRAM Information Session on Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, from 12pm – 1pm in Ross Hall Room 117.
This session is open to all GW freshmen and sophomores interested in the Early Selection Program. We will discuss the application process, prerequisites and admissions process. Also, we continue to require SAT/ACT scores to apply.

Shadow Abroad Opportunity

Lion Tiger Department Internship
National Zoological Park | Washington, DC
The student will work under a keeper in the Lion Tiger unit of the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC. The intern will learn husbandry and management
techniques for a wide variety of animals including lions, tigers, Andean bears, bobcats, prairie dogs, porcupines, maras, and domestic livestock. The intern will learn husbandry skills, including diet preparation, enclosure cleaning and maintenance, enrichment preparation, and behavioral observations. The intern will also gain public speaking skills by interpreting animal behaviors to visitors. By the end of the semester, the intern will complete a poster and a paper with a focus on an animal
husbandry procedure.
The intern will not have any direct contact with collection animals. The selected intern must be able to work in all types of weather, lift 50 pounds, follow all safety protocols, complete health screenings, and complete a background check.
This internship is designed to provide interns to explore careers in the zoo husbandry
field. The internship is an entry-level program, and as such applicants with prior zoo experience may not find it very beneficial. Applicants interested in other aspects of the zoo field, including laboratory research or veterinary medicine, may not find this internship applicable. Students, recent graduates, or individuals in the workforce with little to no experience in a zoo setting are encouraged to apply. Current students will receive support to earn college credit for their time spent in the program.
In order to apply, please send a resume, cover letter, unofficial transcript (if applicable), and a schedule of availability for the spring semester to julianok@si.edu by November 15. Selected applicants will be contacted for interviews no later than December 1.
Length of Internship: 15 weeks, 240 hours total, during the fall semester (start and end dates flexible).
Intern Schedule: 2 set days per week, 8 hours per day, on variable schedule between 7am and 7pm.

CULI 1810 – Fundamentals of Culinary Medicine
Are you interested in taking a unique elective course at GW's School of Medicine in Spring 2025? The GW School of Medicine has a new teaching kitchen and a great course!
CULI 1810: Fundamentals of Culinary Medicine
Fundamentals of Culinary Medicine teaches students the practical skills to realistically apply nutrition concepts to impact their own life and those around them though great tasting food that happens to be good for them. This course provides a comprehensive overview of nutrition and application of nutrition principles through culinary medicine. The course includes hands-on cooking classes, didactic lectures, guest speakers and field trips. Topics covered include basic nutrition concepts, evaluating research, recipe development and modification, food security and barriers to healthy eating, inflammation and an anti-inflammatory diet, food allergies and intolerances, and food policy.
Classes are held in-person at the Seva Teaching Kitchen. The course will include hands-on cooking sessions, didactic lectures, guest speakers, and field trips. The course is a Lecture / Lab series. For the Spring 2025 semester lectures are held most but not all Tuesdays from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM.
The course is appropriate for undergraduate students who are interested in learning about and improving their own, culinary skills, nutrition literacy, and/or health and for students seeking careers in medicine, health, and nutrition.

Work alongside nurses and doctors to provide medical care and assist with office procedures and surgeries
Get to know the patients and walk them through their medical process

Clinical Dermatology Medical Assistant Internship

Well-established, busy dermatologic surgery center in Chevy Chase needs motivated and energetic college graduate for medical assisting position. Will train but must have completed core pre-med curriculum and received BA or BS.
Applicant will learn to:
Take patient history
Assist in minor surgical and cosmetic procedures
Apply wound dressings
Scribe clinical notes
Provide patient education
Participate in teaching sessions, clinical tutorials and research.
Applicant should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be highly computer literate. This is an opportunity to increase your knowledge of medicine and develop clinical skills.
