Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

Film festival regulars -  John Austin, Murray Miller, Sandy Austin and Elly Miller at the Dietrich

I must begin this column with a letter I just received that shows the power and importance of our film festivals, the connections they inspire, and the dedication of the Dietrich community to make everyone feel welcome.  Here is the letter:
“This is an open letter to the staff and volunteers at the Dietrich Theater to thank you for all that you do to make every one of our experiences at the Dietrich the joy that it is!  The friendships that we and our spouses have made with each other since we met several years ago at a Film Festival at the Dietrich is just one of the pleasures that the Dietrich has provided. The Dietrich is a gem and a cultural treasure thanks to the educational and informational nature of the offerings of each of the four film festivals that we attend each year. The discussion group that meets at the conclusion of each festival provides an opportunity for lovers of the art of film to share their analyses of the films they have devoured! It is the icing on the cake…the dessert following the main course!
We probably have experienced enough inspiring and moving connections with other movie-goers at the Dietrich to fill a book with stories because that is simply what happenings in that almost sacred space. We are choosing to share one of those special connections that occurred on Monday of this week (May 5). We saw the movie, Audrey’s Children, based on the true story of Dr. Audrey Evans who was the first female Chief of Oncology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1969. She co-founded the first Ronald McDonald House, and she ultimately impacted the lives of millions of children and families around the world. The percent of children that survive cancer has significantly increased since her work began. When the film ended, a conversation with the father and his adult daughter who had been sitting behind us throughout the movie began during which the daughter shared with us that she had survived cancer at the young age of 13, possibly being one of the children who had benefited from the work of the doctor in the film. She also shared with us that she had never heard of Dr. Audrey Evans before she saw the film. Finally, she shared that she had come back to the region from Texas to visit her father and she had never been to the Dietrich before, but she and her father both wanted to look for a good movie to share before her departure to Texas the following day. Our four-way conversation ended with hugs and well wishes all around.
The film and the conversation that followed it will be with us for as long as we are fortunate to have the gift of memory. Thank you to all of you at the Dietrich who helped make the gift of that extraordinary memory possible this week!”
Warmest regards,
Elly Miller
Sandy Austin
Thank you, Elly and Sandy for sharing your experience. It is a beautiful memory and it warms our heart to hear you tell of the importance of these foreign and independent films that we show right here in our little town of Tunkhannock, population 1,737.  Your story makes it all worthwhile.
By the way, their favorite film and mine of this Spring Film Festival is Rule Breakers, the incredible story of four Afghan girls, defying the rules of the Taliban to study robotics and compete in a world competition.  Make sure to see it if you can.
I told you I would tell you about the next classical guitar concert at the Dietrich. It is Cello and Guitar Music from France, Spain, Argentina and Brazil on Sunday, June 1 at 3:00 p.m. This time Jay will perform with cellist Jeff McAuley and they have chosen music from the French Romantic and Impressionist composers Gabriel Faure and Maurice Ravel, followed by the Spanish Romanticism of Enrique Granados and Isaac Albeniz, and Tango Nuevo of Astor Piazzolla, ending with 20th century Brazilian Heitor-Villa-Lobos and more. This free concert, donations accepted, is sponsored by John Keker in memory of Jessie Reppy Keker. We are so grateful to welcome Jay Steveskey back to our stage, always bringing us something new, which this time is the addition of a cellist.  Tickets are available at the door or you can reserve them at 836-1022 x3.

For the first time we are offering Broadway Style Jazz Dance class with Jessica Cadden Osborne for ages 18 and up on Thursdays from May 29 to June 26 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m..  The classes are free, sponsored in part by the NEIU 19, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the armature. This 5 session dance series will begin with warm-up and mobility work, adding musicality, coordination, and Broadway Style Jazz Dance technique. All levels are welcome. Chairs will be provided for those who need them. Call the number above to register.  Thank you, Annette Sheldon, for letting us know about this class.  We are so grateful.
And we are so grateful for all of you, your stories and ideas and your support.  We can’t wait to see you soon.
