Happy Earth Day!

In the spring of 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) created Earth Day as a way to bring national awareness to the fact that, at the time, there were no legal or regulatory mechanisms in place to protect the environment.

In 1993, Imagine, the official Earth Day Magazine, presented Senator Nelson with the first Earth Day Award for "Leadership and the Environment." Artist Robert Rauschenberg received the Earth Day Award for "Environment and the Arts."

Both of these solid glass awards were made by Josh, from a design by Imagine's Toru Mano. In each sculpture, a green pyramid representing land, Earth, technology, and human history is topped by a vibrant blue Simpson Planet representing air, the universe, and Heaven.

This month's Infinity Planet Recipient is Debra Heitmann. She plans to head for the canyons of New Mexico, ride horseback across the rolling hills of yellow, red and green, and hide her Infinity Planet among the foliage along the trail, in hopes that another wanderer will someday come across it and marvel, as she does, at the mystery and beauty of the world. (She also notes that whoever writes these newsletters is sometimes "friggin' hilarious." We think so too.)

EnviroNote: Glass is made of silica, one of the Earth's primary constituents. It is chemically stable, will remain unchanged for thousands of years, and cannot harm the environment.
