DEVELOPMENT

Sesquicentennial Hall awarded LEED Gold certification
On March 5, after years of hard work and support from BWBR and the State of Wisconsin, Sesquicentennial Hall was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification. LEED certification is an official recognition that a project complies with requirements set by the U.S. Green Building Council, and includes metrics like water efficiency, land protection, indoor environmental quality, energy performance, and more.
The LEED rating system grants certification at 40 points, a silver ranking is 50-59 points, and gold is 60-79 points. Sesquicentennial Hall received a score of 64 points. Sesquicentennial Hall is the first Universities of Wisconsin building dedicated to engineering to achieve LEED Gold certification.

NEWS AND AWARDS

Parker launches Summer Scholar Support program
On March 28, with assistance from the College of EMS Executive Council, Acting Dean Philip Parker announced a new EMS Summer Scholar Support program for 2024. The purpose of the EMS SSS program is to promote scholarly activity in the College of EMS in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) and undergraduate research. Proposals for topics outside of these two tracks may be considered – submitters are encouraged to share their idea with the EMS Dean prior to submittal.
Click here to view and download program guidelines, which include eligibility, funding, and application details. Click here to view and download the evaluation rubric. Applications must be emailed to emseansoffice@uwplatt.edu by April 15 at 8:00 a.m.
EMS SSS is fully funded by donations made to the College of EMS Program Fund.
Inaugural STEM Week in EMS
This semester, the College of EMS will hold it's very first STEM Week April 22-26 to highlight students, faculty, and alumni from all of our STEM programs. The week will include a variety of events including STEM Expo, a STEM trivia scavenger hunt, STEM field spotlights, a special STEM week Donuts with the Dean, giveaways, and more. Check the digital screens for daily events.
Why did you decide to go into your STEM field? Let us know to be included in a STEM field spotlight by filling out this short survey.
If you are interested in hosting an event that highlights or celebrates STEM, please email emsdeansoffice@uwplatt.edu

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS

Senior design team partners with Southwest Tech
The UW-Platteville Sustainability and Renewable Energy Systems senior design team is working with a student in the Sustainable Energy Management program at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College this semester to study the trash generated from single-use and recycling service items, such as cups and food containers, and look for opportunities to move to reusable materials instead. See Southwest Tech's Facebook page for more details and photos of the students in action.
Research in the Rotunda
Two projects at the 20th annual Research in the Rotunda event on March 6 were presented from students in chemistry and civil and environmental engineering programs.
Alaina Wolter, junior, chemistry, Nathan Francisco, senior, chemistry, and Joe Sommers, junior, chemistry presented "Interplay of assembly conditions in polyelectrolyte nanofilms used for drug delivery applications." Dr. Soma Chattopadhyay, assistant dean, professor of chemistry, served as mentor for the project.
Jenna Springer, senior, environmental engineering, Kristin Muench, senior, environmental engineering, Grace Lewis, senior, environmental engineering, and Nate Strandberg, sophomore, environmental engineering presented "Characteristics of polymer modified bentonites under variable chemical conditions." Dr. Gretchen Bohnhoff, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, served as mentor for the project.
Over 150 undergraduate student researchers from Wisconsin participated in this year's event.
Donuts with the Dean
On March 6, Acting Dean Philip Parker and Platteville Distance Engineering Programs Director Melissa Gavin engaged with EMS students in the Sesquicentennial Hall student cafeteria to discuss graduate program opportunities available for UW-Platteville students. The accelerated bachelor's to master's pathway program allows students to graduate with a master's degree in as little as one extra year of schooling.
This event, held twice each semester, is one way Dean Parker connects with students in an open forum setting. Questions are posed to students who post their answers on sticky notes in exchange for a donut.

FACULTY FEATURES

Volz to present on the mathematics of juggling
On April 11, Dr. Katie Volz, assistant professor, mathematics, will team up with Tony Kaseman, sophomore, environmental engineering, for a talk about the mathematics of juggling. Mathematicians have been studying juggling only since the 1980s, despite juggling being around for thousands of years. Volz and Kaseman will discuss mathematical patterns of different juggling sequences like the 4-ball fountain and 5-ball shower, create juggling diagrams, and turn juggling sequences into juggling functions. Kaseman's demonstrations will help attendees visualize the diagrams and sequences. Volz's bi-state math colloquium will be held in Doudna 103 at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.
