Mark 14:9
"Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
New International Version (NIV)
What stands the test of time?  Most things, even things we value greatly, will someday lose their value or be forgotten.  Is there anything you could do today that would make a difference a hundred years from now?

I wonder how long the woman in Bethany had been saving the alabaster jar of perfume.   When she broke it and the fragrance filled the room as she poured it over Jesus’ head, some objected at the waste.  Jesus alone came to her defense saying, “Why are you bothering her?  She has done a noble thing for me.”  I am especially taken by his words, “She has done what she could . . .”  Then this, “Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

What a strong prediction Jesus made.  Today it has come true again.  Here we are reading Mark’s story about a woman’s extravagant gift of love and act of worship to honor her Lord.  Acts of kindness are never wasted.  Even if nobody knows how we help another, God knows.  Even more, we realize that worship is extravagant.  We cannot do too much today for the one who has forgiven us and given us life.  One prayer, one song, one gift of our lives to God will matter forever.  We have been forgiven much.  Let us give God our very best today.  Even if nobody ever finds out, God knows.   In the end, his opinion is the only one that matters.

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for loving us extravagantly on the cross.  Thank you for your perfect Son pouring out his precious life for us.  How shall we respond to your great love?  At least let us love you extravagantly in return.  Take our lives and let them be, consecrated, Lord to thee.  Take our moments and our days.  Let them flow in ceaseless praise.  Help us to do something today which will matter for eternity.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
